Charlie (Walter Matthau) decides to go on a sea cruise in an attempt to woo a wealthy single lady. He bamboozles his irascible brother-in-law, Herb (Jack Lemmon), into coming with him, but the latter is not pleased to discover that their 'luxury accommodation' is deep in the bowels of the ship. Also, Charlie has booked them for dance classes with cruise director Gil Godwyn (Brent Spiner), who is determined to put them through their paces. Romance is on hand, however, in the form of Liz (Dyan Cannon) and Vivian (Gloria De Haven).
