Portrait of Ireland, which has no narrative or documentary stylings of any sort, is like a slide show with a soundtrack. Postcard images of sunsets, sunrises, pasture, bog, grazing sheep, old men drinking stout in pubs, pudgy Irish women standing picturesquely in doorways of thatch-roofed cottages, ancient cairns, castles, heather-blanketed cliffs, crashing waves and serene beaches fade one into another, while the mystic compositions of Enya, James Galway, and the Chieftains provide an aural Celtic accessory.
