Businessman George Barber (Tom McCamus) is discovered dead, with his head cut open and his brain removed, and the police are clueless as to how it all happened. A series of flashbacks shows us scenes from George's life, but it soon becomes clear that George lived not one life but many, arrayed across a number of possible worlds, and in each of these lives he loved a woman named Joyce (Tilda Swinton). The police eventually find George's brain in the laboratory of scientist Dr Kleber (Gabriel Gascon), where it is being subjected to some unusual experiments ....
