Despite the title, Randy Travis Live is not a shock-horror documentary about the seedy past a now-successful Scottish indie group are trying to forget. This is, rather, a straightforward performance of contemporary country veteran, Randy Travis, and his band, and for a live concert has a curiously stilted feel--Travis is either tremendously self-conscious about the cameras, or always punctuates every line with an exaggerated rictus grin, as if he's being sponsored by the gurn. While a lack of fatuous Garth Brooks-style pyrotechnics is always to be encouraged in a modern... country singer, it has to be said that Travis is not the most dynamic of performers--so disengaged is he during the encore rendition of "Runaway Train" that he spends most of the song signing baseball hats for fans in the front row. This is one for the most diehard Randy Travis fans only, if such things exist, and even they may well find it hard work. --Andrew Mueller [show more]
