Fred Astaire enjoyed his first great wave of success in films when he teamed with Ginger Rogers in a wonderful series of musical comedies at RKO in the 1930's. When Ginger left the act it took some time to readjust. After some successful screen teamings with Bing Crosby he was lucky enough to hook up with Arthur Freed at MGM. Freed valued a talent as rare as Astaire's and helped create imaginative settings for his dances. It is no surprise that the producer who made SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and AN AMERICAN IN PARIS would also produce the fabulous Astaire sequence where he... dances on the floor walls and ceiling of a revolving set. It is clearly one of many high water marks in the career of Astaire. The plot concerns the Royal Wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and the journalists who congregate in London to cover the event. Astaire and Powell play a brother and sister dancing team looking for love against this setting. It should also be noted that this is the first solo directorial effort of Stanley Donen who went on to direct such classics as SINGIN' IN THE RAIN SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS FUNNY FACE THE PAJAMA GAME and TWO FOR THE ROAD.
