In 'Sherlock Holmes in Washington' (1943), Holmes and Doctor Watson (Nigel Bruce) go to Washington DC in search of some missing micro-film which must not, on any account, fall into the wrong hands: ie, the Nazis. The film is notably cheeky for its WW2 propaganda - and Watson's fixation with American bubblegum. In 'Sherlock Holmes Faces Death' (1943), Holmes and Watson are hot on the heels of a murderer who has killed a number of retired officers in their retirement home. They check in to the mansion-like home with its mysterious clock-tower, underground crypt and incredible human chess-board and do their best to solve the murders.
