A noir thriller set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Donnie Darko. Even though some found it difficult to follow, I still found it compelling and entertaining. This on the other hand is a mish-mass of concepts, plots and performances that gives David Lynch a run for his money. I understand that a lot of this film ended up on the cutting-room floor, but in my opinion not enough of it did. The pace of the movie is all wrong and it"s also too long to keep the average viewer entertained. I am not disappointed by many films but unfortunately this was one of those rare exceptions.
I watch a lot of films. I enjoy the standard Hollywood blockbuster in any genre. I also occasionally enjoy a film that gives me something to think about and takes me places I didn"t expect to go. Without a shadow of a doubt, Southland Tales is such a film. Its not only set in present day America, it intelligently, cunningly reflects American society, in all its glories and failings. My jaw literally fell open a couple of times. My eyes were wide taking it all in and I immediately watched the ending again - to take it in.
Most film characters and plots are one dimensional - popcorn movies, some enjoyable, most instantly forgettable. Southland Tales has not one single character like this, nor any plot line - there are layers to this film that stay with you long after the credits roll. It had me thinking for hours afterwards - telling friends about it days later and now writing a review (something I very, very rarely do). This is a definite must-have - buy, don"t rent - you"ll definitely want to watch again. Easily, my favourite film in (absolute) years.

Richard (Donnie Darko) Kelly directs this fast-moving ensemble piece set in a futuristic Los Angeles suffering economic and environmental meltdown. It's the fourth of July 2008, three years after a nuclear strike has wiped out a large part of Texas. The federal government, having assumed control of most people's lives in the interim, moves to stop the introduction of a seawater-based energy solution, under pressure from big business. Meanwhile, the government has also got its hands full with a Marxist underground movement intent on revolution, operating on the west coast. The various plotlines revolve around three central characters: Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action movie boxing star, suffering from amnesia, who's trying to get a new project off the ground; Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), a porn star trying to break into TV punditry with her views on everything from teenage sex to west-coast culture, and Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott), an LA cop, who is searching for his, literally, split personality.
