The Battlefield Line acquired its name after the track was relayed by its present owners back to Shenton Station which stands on part of the ground where the Battle of Bosworth was fought in 1845. The line was originally opened in 1873 and was known as the Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway. Passenger traffic ceased as early as 1931and the line finally closed altogether in 1970. The Shackerstone Railway Society was formed in 1969 and has gradually rebuilt part of the line in a southerly direction from Shackerstone reaching Shenton in 1992.
