Storytellers - The Doors: A Celebration DVD

The premise of The Doors--Storytellers is straightforward enough: wheel the surviving three members of The Doors out in front of a studio audience of the devoted, engage a cast of guest singers to stand in for the late Jim Morrison, and allow messrs Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore time to recount a few anecdotes about the good old days and take a few questions from the punters. The result is an hour of television that will bore all but the most hopelessly obsessed Doors fan into a state similar to the one Jim Morrison has been in since 1971. It's not just the lacklustre... performances, or preposterous guest stars (Perry Farrel capering through "LA Woman" like he's got a scorpion in one sandal, Ian Astbury helping the band illustrate their influences with a woefully misconceived stab at Bertolt Brecht), or the fact that anyone with the slightest interest in rock'n'roll has heard these stories about Morrison a million times already. What really grates is the air of reverent solemnity; Manzarek suggesting that Morrison's continuing internment in Paris' Pere Lachaise cemetery is "appropriate" because of the company of Wilde, Moliere, Piaf and Chopin is a moment of rich pathos unrivalled by anything in This Is Spinal Tap. --Andrew Mueller [show more]
