Theo Angelopoulos directs this melancholy Greek drama portraying the mid-life crisis experienced by former teacher Spiros (Marcello Mastroianni). Facing an empty and uncertain future following his retirement and his daughter's wedding, Spiros sets out from the north to the south of Greece in search of a warm spring climate for his colony of bees, which he carries in the back of his lorry. Along the way he meets a girl hitchhiker (Nadia Mourouzi), and a relationship of sorts develops between the two that ultimately serves only to emphasise Spiros's growing sense of loneliness and alienation.
