Political satire directed by Nanni Moretti targeting Silvio Berlusconi's time as Italian Prime Minister. Bruno Bonomo (Silvio Orlando) plays a down-on-his-luck B-movie director with a crumbling marriage, who is thrown a lifeline to direct a film about the PM. Initially non-committal about the subject matter, Bonomo soon warms to his subject, imagining the film in his mind, with Berlusconi portrayed by a variety of actors including Moretti himself. Essentially a film-within-a-film, 'The Caiman' contrasts the political machinations of Italian politics with the 'real-life' events unfolding in the director's life: the break-up of his marriage and the daily struggles involved in film-making.
