In John Ford's adaptation of a Graham Greene novel a priest (Henry Fonda) finds himself forced to go on the run in a south-of-the-border country where religion is outlawed. Having returned to minister to the spiritual needs of the community, the priest becomes a fugitive when he is pursued by the authorities. He is aided in his flight by the locals, who suffer much harsh brutality when they refuse to reveal the whereabouts of the fugitive.
