BBC adaptation of the Henry James novel in which a damaged golden bowl plays a key role in exposing the artifice and fraudulence within a wealthy 19th century family. Italian prince Amerigo (Daniel Massey) is set to marry American heiress Maggie Verver (Jill Townsend), but this doesn't prevent him from prolonging his dalliance with the beautiful Charlotte (Gayle Hunnicutt). When Charlotte marries Maggie's father, Adam (Barry Morse), to whom his daughter is devoted, a house of cards is erected that could come crumbling down at any moment.
