17th century Austria. A band of mercenaries arrive in a beautiful village, a place untouched by the Thirty Years War, and agree to provide protection against any future attacks. The leader of the mercenaries (Michael Caine) forms a bond with the local philosopher (Omar Sharif), but the petty jealousies ignited by the arrival of two beautiful women threatens to shatter the fragile peace; and when news arrives of an approaching army, the future of the village seems less certain than ever.
