Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is a screenplay writer in 1950s Hollywood who finds himself blacklisted due to Senator McCarthy's Communist witchhunts. One night, drunk and despondent, Appleton crashes his car near the town of Lawson and awakes with total memory loss. The townsfolk recognise him as Luke Trimble, a local man who went missing during WWII, and for all Appleton knows they might be right. Trimble's dad, who runs the local cinema, welcomes his 'son' with open arms, and even Adele, the missing man's girlfriend, becomes convinced that Appleton is her former flame. But just as Appleton is settling into his new life, the FBI come prowling, looking for the disappeared screenwriter....
