Anne Baxter won an Oscar for her performance as dipsomaniac Sophie Nelson in this adaptation of Somerset Maugham's famous philosophical novel. Tyrone Power is the restless aviator Larry Darrell, sickened by the slaughter he has witnessed in WWI. He returns to Chicago questioning the moral values and fibre of his society and refuses to join the social 'creme de la creme' of which his high society fiancee Isabel Bradley (Gene Tierney) is a part. Instead he embarks on a quest to find intellectual and spiritual freedom, travelling to Paris and India, where he finds an elderly Hindu mystic who brings peace to his troubled mind. Ten years later, Larry is reunited with Isabel and his former friends, all of whom have suffered in some way.
