The Shire Horse introduced into Britain by William the Conqueror in 1066 carried the knights into tournaments and battle. In the First World War they were used for transportation by the British and French armies. Apart from carting man and hauling long-distance goods the Shires played a vital role in the agricultural revolution of the late eighteenth century.
