  • The Thomas Crown Affair [1999]
    Gary Dicks

Worth watching just for the heists and trickery, 'The Thomas Crown Affair' is an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.
A remake of an old film, it holds together with stylish and classic ideas with a twist of the contemporary. Thankfully, this contemporary edge did not overwhelm the genius of the schemes employed by Mr. Crown, but merely brings it into the present.
Some good performances and certainly a part well suited to Brosnan. However, I think the casting team dropped the ball somewhat in their choice for the leading lady... The part required someone with more finesse and, dare I say it, sex appeal. Some would disagree but I feel that the film would have not only grossed much more but would have appealed to many more people if the leading lady, who uses her feminine wiles often, had been the kind of girl who isn't cringeworthy in such a role.
This problem aside, the film is good and maybe deserved more acclaim than it received.

Based on the 1968 film of the same name, THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR offers a peak into the nefarious lives of the rich and famous. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is a man with looks, wit, and millions of dollars, yet the only way he can feel truly alive is during the thrill of the heist. When a valuable Monet painting comes to town, Crown decides stealing it would be the ultimate rush. As the New York high society demands justice, little do they--or the police--suspect that one of their very own has committed the crime. Expert Catherine Danning (Rene Russo) is brought in investigate the stolen Monet painting. But as she come closer to proving Crown guilty, she is drawn into his world, and falls in deeply in love with him. For THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, director John McTiernan takes action elements of his previous films (both the explosive urban setting of DIE HARD and the racy pursuit feel of PREDATOR) and spins them into a sophisticated thriller about the downfalls of wealth and high society.

This well-received remake of the 1968 thriller stars Pierce Brosnan in the Steve McQueen role, with Rene Russo in the part originally played by Faye Dunaway. Billionaire art collector Thomas Crown (Brosnan) decides to steal a priceless Monet from a New York museum. He is investigated by sultry insurance investigator Catherine Banning (Russo). She soon realises that he did steal the painting, but is more interested in Crown on a personal basis. Soon, the two become lovers, but suspicion and deception hang over the relationship.
