West Cornwall in 1895: a once-glorious tin mine is now in its final death throes. A weather-beaten opera company arrives in town and finds itself tangled up in a scam to offload the mine's worthless shares. Bill Scott directs this adaptation of the 1888 novel by Richard Boynes. After getting caught in a storm, a wet and miserable opera company finally arrive at a small mining village on the Cornish coast where they are scheduled to give a performance of Beethoven's 'Fidelio'. When they discover that the village's tin mine has become a front for a banking scam, the group's leader Marjorie Dawson (Jenny Agutter) takes it upon herself to confront the bankers.
