Drama starring Susan Hayward as the daughter of a traditional cattle owner who builds an oil empire. When her father dies in an oil well blast, Cherokee Lansing (Hayward) becomes determined to seek revenge. However, while she fights for her property and stages wildcat drilling she forgets about all human values. Can geologist Brad Brady (Robert Preston) help her see the error of her ways?

In the midst of the oil boom with what began as a crusade to fight developers takes a turn as the daughter of a cattle owner hits a rich vein of rich oil and builds the oil empire that threatens the livelihoods of long-established cattle ranchers and their way of life. She must decide between her loyal old ways of life or to become part of modernisation.
