BBC adaptation of the classic trilogy by Patrick Hamilton, set in the seedy backstreets and pubs of London in the 1930s. Three characters search for love, their stories coalescing around The Midnight Bell pub off the Euston Road. Bob (Bryan Dick) is the barman, lusting after street-walker Jenny (Zoe Tapper). His colleague Ella (Sally Hawkins) is torn between her secret love for Bob, and her growing attraction to an older, wealthier man who is slumming it in these dingy environs. Meanwhile Jenny, having been forced onto the streets by circumstances, struggles to keep her head above water as she falls deeper into debt and depression. Includes all three parts.
