Not only was it a box office smash but spawned three popular sequels, gaining an instant cult following amongst both sci-fi and martial arts fans. The original Universal Soldier follows Luc Deveraux (Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Lundgren), two soldiers killed in Vietnam who are raised from the dead in a bizarre government experiment. Genetically altered and modified they're both transformed into indestructible killing machines, warriors programmed to kill. The Return sees Deveraux in conflict with the unstoppable Seth, a newly formed Unisol intent on cold-blooded annihilation. In Regeneration Deveraux is reactivated in order to stop a nuclear catastrophe and is forced to face and old enemy. In 'Universal Soldier' (1992) Luc Devereux (Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Lundgren) are two soldiers who were killed in action in Vietnam, then frozen and resurrected as robotic killing machines. They form part of an elite corps of anti-terrorist androids, but when they are sent to murder investigative reporter Veronica Roberts (Ally Walker), Devereaux rebels and refuses to comply with his orders. In 'Universal Soldier: The Return' (1999), having survived the violence and turmoil of his previous existence, Luc Deveraux has started a family and is working as a technical consultant on the Universal Soldier programme. The new generation of cyborg soldiers are overseen by the S.E.T.H. supercomputer and are even more deadly than before. Danger arises when S.E.T.H. becomes sentient and tries to negate Deveraux by kidnapping his daughter. With his family at stake, the Universal Soldier must return into action. In 'Universal Soldier: Regeneration' (2009) a terrorist group has employed two state-of-the-art UniSol fighters to seize power of the crippled Chernobyl nuclear reactor and is threatening to unleash a deadly radioactive cloud if its terms are not met. Can ex-UniSol Luc Deveraux possibly be a match for these virtually indestructible warriors? The fate of humankind hangs in the balance as the ultimate showdown unfolds. Finally, in 'Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning' (2012), Deveraux and Scott are preparing a rogue company of genetically enhanced UniSols for a final, all-out battle to free themselves from government control. Meanwhile, John (Scott Adkins) awakens from a coma to discover that his wife and daughter have been brutally murdered. Haunted by the attack, John sets out to track down and kill the man responsible, Deveraux, all the while pursued by a merciless UniSol named Magnus (Andrei Arlovski).
