Sir Ian McKellen stars as Walter, a man with learning difficulties, in this award-winning TV drama directed by Stephen Frears. After first his father (Arthur Whybrow) dies, soon followed by his mother Sarah (Barbara Jefford), Walter's life changes dramatically overnight. With no one to care for him, he finds himself transported to the confines of a mental institution, where he is soon subjected to cruel and degrading abuse.
