  Creighton Masterson, in a last ditch effort to save his marriage, whisks his wife Lydia away for a tropical vacation. Staying on an isolated beach in the Bahamas, the Mastersons meet William and Mary, who live on a nearby island and invite them for dinner. Upon their return, Lydia and Creighton are shocked to discover that they have been robbed. With no sign of the intruders, they seek help from the only other people on the island, a couple named Jacob and Nina. Though friendly at first, the mysterious couple seems to be hiding darker motives. With no one to trust but each other, Lydia and Creighton are forced to work together and fight for their future.

  The town of Elwood is a small rural collection of colourful characters tended to by “Doc” a physician who looks out for the well being of the town and sees the community as his patient. Seiler a war veteran trains a group of 20 something’s in paintball skirmish strategy as a practice for real weapon and militia training. It is an eclectic team of young men and women with Brody seeing potential in trainee Ian Sommers. The town is enclosed wide fencing that stretches miles around its perimeter. What lies beyond the fence is something awful in the deep forests surrounding the town. Humans die but keep moving & shamble the landscape looking to spread their infection in a grisly horrific way. The community is guarded by a band of young people raised since children to be military combatants. Under the leadership of vet Seiler (Billy Zane) they are known by the community as “Zombie Killers” a negative term used behind their backs. Ian Sommers tends to his dying mother Sharon (Dee Wallace) while having a semblance of normal life with girlfriend Nikki (Gabrielle Stone). Rory Gower and his young wife Toni (Mischa Barton) search for a reason behind the plague while Seiler and his Young soldiers discover something far worse coming for Elwood. Something that may target them or put them in the way of an “Elephant’s Graveyard” and Hell.

  Strigoi is a vampire movie that defies categorisation. Vlad Cozma (Catalin Paraschiv) is a young man returning to his grandfather's village from Italy with barely a foot through the front door Vlad dives head first into investigating a mysterious death that raises questions about land ownership in the community. The trail points to ex-communist bully Constantin Tirescu (Constantin Barbulescu) and his wife but when Vlad confronts them he discovers that the richest landowners in the village have become real bloodsuckers. Full of unpredictable twists and turns brimming with black humour and drenched in Romanian folklore Strigoi is a nihilistic and bitingly funny film akin to discovering a beautiful black rose blooming in an (un)dying over killed film genre.

  The Sorcerers, the second film directed by the lost "wunderkind" of British cinema Michael Reeves, may not have the scope and visceral impact of his masterpiece, Witchfinder General (1968), but there's enough fierce originality here to show what a tragic loss it was when he died from a drugs overdose aged only 24. The film also shows the effective use he made of minimal resources, working here on a derisory budget of less than £50,000--of which £11,000 went to the film's sole "named" star, Boris Karloff. Karloff plays an elderly scientist living with his devoted wife in shabby poverty in London, dreaming of the brilliant breakthrough in hypnotic technique that will restore him to fame and fortune. Seeking a guinea-pig, he hits on Mike, a disaffected young man-about-town (Ian Ogilvy, who starred in all three of Reeves' films). But the technique has an unlooked-for side effect--not only can he and his wife make Mike do their bidding, they can vicariously experience everything that he feels. At which point, it turns out that the wife has urges and desires that her husband never suspected. Karloff, then almost at the end of his long career, brings a melancholy dignity to his role; but the revelation is the veteran actress Catherine Lacey as the seemingly sweet old lady, turning terrifyingly avid and venomous as she realises her power. The portrayal of Swinging London, with its mini-skirted dollybirds thronging nightclubs where the strongest stimulant seems to be Coke rather than coke, has an almost touching innocence, but Reeves invests it with a dream-like quality, extending it into scenes of violent death in labyrinthine dark alleys. By this stage, some ten years after it started, the British horror cycle was winding down in lazy self-parody. Reeves had the exceptional talent and vision to revive it, had he only lived. On the DVD: The Sorcerers DVD has original trailers for both this film and Witchfinder General (both woefully clumsy); filmographies for Reeves, Karloff and Ogilvy; an "image gallery" (a grab-bag of posters, stills and lobby cards); detailed written production notes by horror-movie expert Kim Newman; and an excellent 25-minute documentary on Reeves, "Blood Beast", dating from 1999. The transfer is letterboxed full-width, with acceptable sound. --Philip Kemp

  A group of archaeology students who look like they have just walked out of Beverly Hills 90210 are given the privilege of studying an Aztec mummy that has been discovered in Los Angeles. It turns out, however, that a geek among them is in fact a high priest of an ancient Aztec religion, who wishes to resurrect the mummy in order to punish his peers for years of social neglect. Such a synopsis might conceal what this film actually is: a mummy waddling around what looks like a villa (presumably the producer's house) and killing the few so-called characters to whom we have been introduced. The six murders are directed without any suspense or shock factor and, more criminally for a low-budget horror film, there is not even any tongue-in-cheek humour or over-the-top gore. Admittedly, the mummy itself is very entertaining: portly, and with a fluffy, Jack Charlton side-parting, it looks like someone has buried a close friend's dad and dug them up two weeks later. Truly horrific. --Paul Philpott
