  Mae West, who wrote this and a handful of other movies during the 1930s, stars as 1890s blues singer Ruby in a comic romp that follows the dazzling entertainers quest to find the man of her dreams without being duped. Ruby distracts boxer Tiger so much that Tigers manager asks Ruby to leave town, but its not the last that Ruby and Tiger will see of each other. Singing such songs as "My Old Flame" and "Memphis Blues" with a sultry air in front of Duke Ellingtons orchestra, Ruby projects sex and sincerity at the same moment. Using both her brains and her looks to keep herself out of the grasp of troublemakers, Ruby outwits her female competition and the male predators to emerge unscathed and with her beau on her arm. The script was ruthlessly pared by the censorship board, but Mae West slips enough double entrendres through to make this show, directed by the great Leo McCarey, a delight.

  In his last starring role W.C. Fields plays himself having a typical day at his studio Esoteric Pictures. Director Eddie Cline masterfully imparts a certain level of surreal spontaneity to Field's digressions and misadventures. Fields eats breakfast spars with a sarcastic waitress (Jody Gilbert) and then pitches his fractured script to studio head Franklin Pangborn. The script reading becomes a film within a film commencing with the hero of the tale (Fields again playing himself) leaping out of an airplane in hot pursuit of a flask of whiskey. He lands on the bed of an innocent young girl and tries to seduce her before her mom (Margaret Dumont) comes crashing in. Fields then escapes over a cliff in a basket. Things get even more bizarre before Pangborn throws him out and back into a reality that culminates in a lengthy frenetic car chase. There's also some musical interludes courtesy Gloria Jean a singing star Universal was grooming for success at the time. Though Fields undoubtedly bristled at the studio's insistence he share the bill the two actually display a touching rapport in their scenes together; just another small miracle in this truly unique and hilarious film.

  This two-hour film tells the incredible story of one of the greatest artists and most important R&B groups of all time. Also included in the documentary are 22 complete vintage television performances from The Impressions and Curtis Mayfield's solo career filmed between 1965 and 1973. In addition to telling the history of Curtis Mayfield as an artist and the Impressions as a group the film explores how The Impressions' music was a virtual soundtrack for the civil rights era in the '60s. In an interview filmed exclusively for the documentary civil rights leader Ambassador Andrew Young (who worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) speaks about the effect classic Impressions songs such as People Get Ready Choice of Colours and We're A Winner had on the movement and how often their songs were sung for inspiration in churches and during marches (some led by Dr. King.) The film also shows how Curtis Mayfield's solo work helped define the early '70s. Chuck D leader of the rap group Public Enemy provides context about Curtis's music as a soundtrack to the grim realities of urban life culminating with his 1972 masterpiece Superfly. In addition Carlos Santana speaks about Curtis Mayfield's unique genius as a songwriter artist and teacher and also comments on the spiritual nature of his music. Also featured in the film are Impressions Fred Cash and Sam Gooden who discuss the history of the group beginning with their origins in the late '50s and share incredible stories about many of their classic songs as well as give insight into Curtis as a songwriter. In addition producer/arranger Johnny Pate speaks about the recording process of their classic songs and reminisces about the Impressions in the studio. Altheida Mayfield Curtis's widow provides tender insight into the personal side of Curtis including his inspirations and aspirations as well as stories about Curtis as a husband and family man. Curtis Mayfield himself speaks through several archival interviews filmed throughout his career.
