  • Gluck - Orphee Et Eurydice (Gardiner)Gluck - Orphee Et Eurydice (Gardiner) | DVD | (24/11/2008) from £4.66   |  Saving you £5.59 (164.41%)   |  RRP £8.99

When the historic Theatre du Chatelet in Paris re-opened after a period of extensive refurbishment the first two productions mounted in the theatre were Gluck''s Alceste and Orph''e et Eurydice. Both operas were sung in their French versions and were mounted and designed by Robert Wilson and conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. This was the first time Wilson and Gardiner had collaborated and their individual credentials combined to produce an exceptional result. American polymath Wilson was responsible for some of the most ambitious avant-garde performance projects of the 1970s and 80s.Since the mid-1980s he has increasingly brought his prodigious creativity to works fiom the standard dramatic and operatic repertoire transforming them into his own unmistakably minimalist yet grandiose visions. His styled classical interpretations of Alceste and Orph''e bear his trademarks of an uncluttered stage and the arresting use of colour and light. They are not so much timeless as in Robert Wilson''s words ''full of time''. With their minutely rehearsed gestures at once formal and poetic the singers have the grace and elegance of Balanchine or Martha Graham dancers. A key figure in the revival of Early Music John Eliot Gardiner has long been a champion of Gluck''s French operas and is a great Gluck conductor. He received enormous critical acclaim for his musical direction of both Orph''e and Alceste at the Chatelet as did his orchestras and chorus. He sought to rid the operas of any vestiges of remoteness or venerable respectability and to release the huge emotional charge that lies behind the beauty of Gluck''s classical sobriety. The stories are after all he says not only poignant and deeply moving they have an immediate and contemporary relevance: they portray two married couples striving to protect their union and their love plumbing the very depths of their emotional strength and summoning the courage to make huge personal sacrifices. ''If presented in a way that''s immediate and with tremendous intensity and truth of expression then all the dross and superficiality of the stage action falls away and you''re left with what''s actually a very visceral connection between two living people.'' Television''s top opera director Brian Large worked closely with Robert Wilson and John Eliot Gardiner to ensure that the translation of live performance to the small screen is of the highest artistic and techcal standard. John Eliot Gardiner chose to use Berlioz''s 1859 revision of Orphee which adapted the tenor role of Gluck''s 1774 score for the contralto voice of Pauline Viardot adjusting the register for a mezzo-soprano. Underlining his preference for this version he performed the opera with the nineteenth-century period instruments of his Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique. His regular chorus the Monteverdi Choir excelled vocally and dramatically in its elegant contribution to the drama. The Greek legend of Orpheus has captured the imaginations of many creative artists over the centuries. In this recording Magdalena Kozena brings to the role expressiveness exceptional virtuosity and a rare emotion. Madeline Bender as Eurydice is possessed of a touching grace and beauty while Patricia Petibon is deliciously mischievous as Amour. All three of these young singers are among the cream of a new generation of operatic talent.

Adapted from ''‰mile Zola's novel of the same name Marcel L'Herbier's L'Argent [Money] is an opulent classic of late-silent era cinema. Filmed in part on location at the Paris stock exchange it reveals a world of intrigue greed decadence and ultimately corruption and scandal when business dealings and amorous deceit combine. Business tycoons Saccard and Gunderman lock horns when the former attempts to raise capital for his faltering bank. To inflate the price of his stock Saccard concocts a duplicitous publicity stunt involving the unwitting aviator Hamelin and a flight across the Atlantic to drill for oil much to the dismay of his wife Line. While Hamelin is away the lascivious Saccard attempts to seduce Line whose own temptation by the allure of money puts herself and her husband in danger - pawns in a high-stakes chess game played out by unscrupulous speculators. With an all-star cast (Brigitte Helm and Alfred Abel fresh from Fritz Lang's Metropolis alongside Pierre Alcover Yvette Guilbert and luminary of the French avantgarde Antonin Artaud) and a mammoth budget L'Argent is comparable in period and scale with other celebrated epics of the silent era such as Abel Gance's Napol''on. With its use of portable cameras that literally descend into the Bourse and revolve around its lavish contours L'Argent represents a type of cinematic Impressionism distinctive to the silent art - a poetry that would change forever with the coming of sound.

  • The X Files: I Want To Believe (1 Disc Edition with Exclusive Free X Files Poster) [DVD]The X Files: I Want To Believe (1 Disc Edition with Exclusive Free X Files Poster) | DVD | (24/11/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe is a satisfying if unspectacular installment in the X-Files series, taking place an unspecified time after the show's nine-year television run. Former agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is now a doctor, while Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is being hunted by his former agency and living in seclusion. He and Scully are summoned back by a case involving a missing agent and a former priest (Billy Connolly) who claims to be able to see clues to the agent's whereabouts psychically, though his initial search turns up only a severed limb. Don't expect the usual cast of characters; the FBI has completely turned over (except for the George W. Bush portrait), and the only reason Scully and Mulder are back is because agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) remembers his success on similar cases involving the inexplicable. Don't expect the same rogues' gallery either; unlike the previous X-Files feature film, which was inextricably linked to the series' convoluted mythology arc (and served as a bridge between the fifth and sixth seasons), I Want to Believe is a stand-alone piece that makes use of the series' roots in horror/sci-fi and moody Vancouver, B.C., locales. Also unlike the previous film, which was almost self-consciously shot for the big screen, this film is on a smaller scale, like a double-length episode of the series. But it's still a good reminder of the creepy vibe that hooked fans for years. And the relationship between Mulder and Scully? It seems to have resumed pretty much where it left off, at least when you take into account the long period of separation. But stick around for the end-credit sequence to take in all the possibilities for the future. --David Horiuchi, Amazon.com

Blades Of Glory (2007): When rival figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) go ballistic in an embarrassing no-holds-barred fight at the World Championships they are stripped of their gold medals and banned from the sport for life. Now three-and-a-half years on they've found a loophole that will allow them to compete: if they can put aside their differences they can skate together - in pairs' figure skating.... Zoolander (2001): Clear the runway for Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) VH1's three-time male model of the year. His face falls when hippie-chic he's so hot right now Hansel (Owen Wilson) scooters in to steal this year's award. The evil fashion guru Mugatu (Will Ferrell) seizes the opportunity to turn Derek into a killing machine. It's a well-designed conspiracy and only with the help of Hansel and a few well-chosen accessories like Matilda (Christine Taylor) can Derek make the world safe for male models everywhere! Ben Stiller's Zoolander is an endearingly broad silly off-the-wall comedy to be enjoyed by beautiful people everywhere. Strike a pose! Team America (2004): An elite U.S. counter-terrorism squad loses a member while decimating half of Paris in the reckless pursuit of Middle Eastern maniacs; a Broadway actor with a traumatic childhood secret is naturally hired to replace him. Oh and they're all marionettes. South Park maestros Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with co-writer Pam Brady) came up with this shameless satire of pea-brained Hollywood action flicks and even smaller-minded global politics so don't expect subtlety or even a hint of good taste. Team America is soon on the trail of North Korea's evil Kim Jong Il who treats us to a tender song about his loneliness before ensnaring Alec Baldwin and the rest of the oblivious Film Actors Guild (F.A.G. for short) in a plot to blow up every major city on the planet. Just as the mindless squad cheerfully demolishes everything in sight so do director Parker and company. Throwing punches Left Right and in-between the movie's politics leave no turn un-stoned; there's even time to bludgeon the musical Rent. It's offensive irresponsible comic anarchy seemingly made by sniggering little boys. Painfully funny sniggering little boys... Wayne's World (1992): Wayne and Garth the horny heavy metal-loving teenage heroes of the popular Saturday Night Live skit hit the big screen. They're still doing their cable-access show out of the Wayne's basement in Aurora Illinois; only now a sleazy TV executive named Benjamin Oliver wants a piece of the action. As the babe 'n' band obsessed adolescents negotiate the shark-infested waters of network television Wayne finds 'amore' in the form of a heavy metal femme fatale with a penchant for skin-tight costumes. But can Wayne keep his new lady love out of Oliver's unsavory clutches?
