| RRP Shindo's stylish black-and-white ghost story forms a companion piece to his earlier film Onibaba. Once again we have a woman and her daughter-in-law preying on a lone samurai. But the mood here is a little gentler and more poignant than we are accustomed to. The two women are victims of a brutal gang of samurai: they are raped and killed and fire is set to their hut. But when their cat licks the blood from their corpses, they are transformed into shape-shifting demons that favour the form of black cats. Waylaying benighted warriors, they wreak their revenge. A champion samurai is sent against them, but he finds the monsters he's hired to destroy are his own wife and mother. Shindo skilfully builds an atmosphere of eerie menace--draperies waving in the wind, Hikaru Hiyashi's score mimicking the desolate caterwauls that precede each killing. Shindo, faithful as ever to his left-wing principles, includes a strong measure of barbed social comment in his portrayal of the arrogant samurai class. --Philip Kemp

| RRP What's left to be said about Deep Purple? Together with Led Zeppelin The Who and Black Sabbath they are considered the fathers of heavy rock and to some the creators of heavy metal. One of the symbols of the seventies or as they often say... a legend. The line up called MK2 (Blackmore-Lord-Paice-Gillan-Glover) released albums that are milestones of rock: In Rock Machine Head and Fireball. Gillan and Glover left after the release of Who Do We Think We Are. Deep Purple decided to continue and entered one of the most controversial exciting and extreme phases of their career. Back then unknown vocalist David Coverdale (later superstar of his own band Whitesnake) and bass player Glenn Hughes joined the band. The following albums Burn and Stormbringer showed they could maintain the same levels of the previous incarnation of the band and reached the classic album status. When Blackmore decided to leave the band they surprisingly decided to continue recruiting guitarist Tommy Bolin. They released the great album Come Taste The Band and played in front of immensely large audiences at the peak of their glamourous lives... until excesses affected the band and Bolin tragically died of a heroin overdose. Deep Purple were then officially split up. In 1984 Deep Purple reformed with the original line-up featuring Gillan and Glover yet although a lot had happened since then the band is still touring the world and remains one of the most important names in rock history. It would be a big mistake to ignore the great music that Deep Purple produced between 1972 and 1976. Rises Over Japan: 30 minute-long live footage filmed in 16mm in Japan restored in HD. Never before released not even on bootlegs. Originally planned to be included in a Deep Purple film the short movie was never released after Tommy Bolin's death. If it wasn't known the show is from 1976 the stunning video quality would make the viewer believe this is a production filmed with the most modern HD cameras. Getting Tighter: The full length 90 minute documentary of the story behind Deep Purple after Ian Gillan and Roger Glover's departures. Jon Lord and Glenn Hughes tell the story of the post Gillan years through never before seen live images backstage footage never before told stories and original video material collected through years of hard work. A real dream come true for all Deep Purple fans. New inside stories and the truths about the dark sides of Deep Purple with the rise and fall of their seventies years will really grab fans. CD: The original soundtrack and more. The best of Deep Purple MKIV (Bolin-Lord-Paice-Coverdale-Hughes) from the Rises Over Japan concert and more. Diaz: Don't Clean Up This Blood | DVD | (10/06/2013)
from £4.99
| Saving you £8.00 (61.60%)
| RRP In 2001 on the last day of the G8 summit in Genoa just before midnight more than 300 police officers stormed the Diaz school looking for black bloc demonstrators. Inside the school were 90 activists mostly students from around Europe along with a handful of foreign journalists preparing to bunk down for the night on the school's floors. As the police burst in the young demonstrators raised their hands to surrender. Undeterred and unmoved the officers unleashed a calculated frenzy of violence beating both young and old male and female indiscriminately. Diaz: Don't Clean Up This Blood reconstructs the events of those terrible days from the viewpoints of the police the protesters the victims and the journalists who were caught up in the tragedy to analyse how frustration can explode into raw uncontrollable violence. Vicari's visceral dynamic filmmaking drops the viewer into the dark heart of politics and reminds you through the inclusion of original footage taken at the scene that this may be a movie but it is not fiction.

| RRP West Ham United's 2011/12 season ended in the joy of promotion to the Barclays Premier League following victory over Blackpool in the npower Championship Play-Off final at Wembley. The plan for 2012/13 was simple - improve the squad and consolidate the Club's position in the top-flight. The Board and manager Sam Allardyce brought in the experienced Matt Jarvis Mohamed Diame Jussi Jaaskelainen and James Collins and made a statement of intent by signing England centre forward Andy Carroll on a season-long loan from Liverpool. The moves paid dividends as West Ham made a strong start to the campaign scoring a number of fine victories including a 3-1 win over European champions Chelsea. The New Year saw West Ham recover from a slight downturn in form to maintain their position in the relative comfort of mid-table. Off the pitch the Club was also able to celebrate being named anchor concessionaire of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium. West Ham ended another impressive season in the Barclays Premier League's top ten - some achievement for a newly-promoted Club. You can enjoy all the goals and all the victories here on your 2012/13 Season Review DVD!
