MODERN CONFLICTS - THE GULF WAR: Wings Over The Gulf - First Strike | DVD | (01/06/2013)

| RRP In Operation Desert storm, the F-15 Eagle upheld its reputation as a 'super fighter' and the Stealth F-117 Nighthawk put and end to worries that it was a high-priced failure. First flown in 1972, McDonnell Douglas's F-15 surpassed the Soviets' MiG 25 as the fastest, most maneuverable fighter in the world. During the air war over Iraq, they proved their worth with their ability to fly effectively at night and in adverse weather conditions and to strike targets with pinpoint accuracy. They intercepted enemy aircraft but also safeguarded friendly ones, dropping in total 11 million pounds of ordnance. After years of top secrecy, two well-publicised F-117 crashes led many to wonder if the plane's $52 million price tag was worth it. During Operation Desert Storm, they were consistently assigned the most dangerous targets. Their success was due to their stealth technology which gave the element of surprise. Forty-two F-117s flew sorties over the flak-filled skies of Baghdad and demolished the Iraqi command and control network. Not only did every F-117 comeback but none of them bore so much as a stretch. Experience from inside the bombing runs and air-to-air engagement in this enthralling DVD.
Doom | Blu Ray | (25/06/2013)
from £26.98
| Saving you £-14.21 (-111.30%)
| RRP Grab your BFG and get ready to kick some Martian-demon butt in Doom, another entry in the increasingly crowded videogame-to-movie genre. The Rock plays Sarge, the commander of a squad of Marines sent to investigate a disturbance at a scientific research facility on Mars. Among the squad is John Grimm (Karl Urban, who played Eomer in The Lord of the Rings), who turns out to have had a previous relationship with Samantha (Rosamund Pike, Die Another Day), the scientist who's accompanying the Marines in order to retrieve some vital data from the facility. Based on id Software's legendary first-person shooter, Doom tries its best to look like a game, with dark, angled corridors, ferocious creatures appearing out of nowhere, and a variety of lethal weapons that will, like the aforementioned BFG, warm the cockles of a gamer's heart. There's also one memorable sequence that actually turns the movie into a first-person shooter; the good news is that in the context of the whole film, it's not quite as goofy as it might have been. And that's not a bad frame of reference for the film in general. Considering the game-to-movie field includes such duds as Wing Commander, if you go into Doom with low expectations, you'll probably find it a surprisingly respectable horror/sci-fi thriller in the Resident Evil vein (including its somewhat obligatory subplot of corporate wrongdoing). Also in its favor is that it's unabashedly R-rated, for the extreme gore that is a trademark of the game. After all, the purpose of the movie is to pack scares and thrills into a setting that gamers will quickly recognize. In that sense, it qualifies as a success. --David Horiuchi
Big Lebowski | Blu Ray | (25/06/2013)
from £24.99
| Saving you £-12.69 (N/A%)
| RRP The Big Lebowski, a casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen brothers (Ethan and Joel), seems like a bit of a lark and the result was a box-office disappointment. It's lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned? And where else could you find a hair-netted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins? The plot--which finds Lebowski involved in a kidnapping scheme after he's mistaken for a rich guy with the same name--is almost beside the point. What counts here is a steady cascade of hilarious dialogue, great work from Coen regulars John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, and the kind of cinematic ingenuity that puts the Coens in a class all their own. --Jeff Shannon

| RRP On January 31, 1968, the North Vietnamese Army launches the surprise Tet Offensive, simultaneously attacking dozens of South Vietnamese cities. Among them is the ancient city of Hue. A very small contingent of US Marines and South Vietnamese Army troops defend the city and they are quickly surrounded and badly outnumbered 10 to 1. At first the Marines have no idea as to the extent of the attack and do not know that nearly all the city has fallen under Communist control. As they begin their counter-attacks, they meet stiff and determined resistance. Even as reinforcements arrive, narrowing the odds to 4 to1, the Marines are continually pinned down by dangerous machine gun nests and hidden North Vietnamese troops. The Marines had to attack the communists block by block, building by building, to drive them out. As the battle unfolds, strategic objectives change by the day. It becomes clear that they will have to drive the North Vietnamese out of the South side of Hue before they can regain control of the city.

Serenity | Blu Ray | (25/06/2013)
from £26.98
| Saving you £-14.21 (-111.30%)
| RRP Serenity is a film that, by rights, shouldnt have been made. For starters, its spun out of the short-lived and quickly-cancelled TV series Firefly, which has only itself got the full recognition it deserves on DVD. It then marries up two seemingly incompatible genres, the western and science fiction, has no major stars to speak of, and pretty much has hard sell written all over it. Perhaps that explains its modest box office performance back in 2005. What it fails to reflect, however, is that this is one of the most energetic, downright enjoyable sci-fi flicks in some time. Not for nothing did many rate it higher than the Star Wars movie that appeared in the same year. It follows renegade captain Mal Reynolds and his quirkily assembled crew, as they work on the outskirts of space, trying to keep out of the way of the governing Alliance. That plan quickly changes when they take on a couple of passengers who have attracted the attention of said Alliance, and thus the scene is set for an action-packed, cleverly written movie that deserves many of the plaudits that have rightly been thrust in its direction. Whats more, Serenity works whether youve seen the TV series that precedes it or not. Clearly fans of the Firefly show will be in their element, but even the casual viewer will find an immense amount to enjoy. The only real problem is that given the films box office returns, further adventures of Reynolds and his crew look unlikely. Unless Serenity turns into a major hit on DVD, that is. Its well worth playing your part in making that happen.--Simon Brew
