  One of the most important series in the history of television. A 26-episode World War II documentary from the American perspective Victory at Sea is one of the most important series in the history of television. Made in 1952 the show was a huge success winning many major awards and even spawning albums featuring the orchestral score by Richard Rodgers (South Pacific). Produced with the full cooperation of the US Navy each 26-minute programme consists of black and white wartime film edited to a narration by Leonard Graves. Each episode contains at least one powerful stand-alone sequence in the tradition of Sergei Eisenstein these action-suspense setpieces giving the programmes an urgent surprisingly modern feel. The emphasis throughout is at least as much on entertainment as information the factual content delivered in poetic narration the score transforming the war into a more than usually serious Hollywood adventure. The documentaries are wide-ranging covering parts of the land war and including everything from the Atlantic convoys and Uboat 'Wolfpacks' to war in Alaska the South Atlantic the Far East the Pacific War and the Fall of Japan. The narration offers a fascinating insight into how America saw WWII in the early 1950s while the dynamic cutting and often genuinely remarkable wartime footage make Victory at Sea still gripping today.

A quest fraught with drama and danger takes them to some of the capital's most iconic landmarks and beyond (a reflection of the drama's origin as an adventure story published by London Transport), while the action is complemented by an atmospheric contemporary soundtrack featuring, among others, Pink Floyd, The Nice, Cream and The Moody Blues. Shown once in black and white in 1968, this is the first time it will be seen in colour, transferred from original film materials specifically for this release. This six-part mystery thriller was Thames Television's very first production. Shot on location on 16mm film, it was effectively an experiment to assess the feasibility of a small-scale production unit within the company - a subsidiary that would eventually become the legendary Euston Films, responsible for a string of phenomenally successful dramas including The Sweeney and Minder. Music from The Rolling Stones, The Nice, The Moody Blues, Cream and Pink Floyd.

  A highly successful crime show from the late 1950s, Shadow Squad initially featured the adventures of Detective Vic Steele who, tired of being boxed in by rules and regulations, quit his job to form his own detective agency with the help of crafty Cockney Ginger Smart and their stalwart cleaning lady, Mrs. Moggs. Steele subsequently disappeared on a mission to Australia and the running of the Squad was then taken up by ex-DI Don Carter. Its longevity and popularity provided a training ground for key television writers of the 1960s and '70s, including BAFTA-nominated Julian Bond and Coronation Street creator Tony Warren. 179 episodes were transmitted between 1957 and 1959, but only four now remain in the archive. These classic examples of a bygone age of television are featured on this set alongside the sole remaining episode of the Shadow Squad spinoff Skyport, which features Ginger Smart as an airport security guard.
