Pub Dig With Rory Mcgrath | DVD | (18/11/2013)
from £19.99
| Saving you £-7.00 (N/A%)
| RRP THE COMMAND HOUSE: Rory and Paul begin their pub dig journey at the Command House pub in Chatham, Kent, digging through 400 years of naval history in search of Henry VIII s lost Tudor docks and relics from the time of Nelson and the British Empire. Surprisingly, no one has dug here before, so this is completely unchartered territory. As the team begin to dig, they come down on the foundations of a huge Georgian storehouse, once filled with the cannon that armed ships like Nelson s Victory , but the ultimate aim is to find archaeology from the time when Henry VIII and Elizabeth I ruled Britain. Finding the lost dockyard would be a major discovery, as it was where the fleet that destroyed the Spanish Armada in 1588 was based. Will they uncover what they re looking for? But it s not all work: while the trenches are being deepened, Rory and Paul make a bucket load of grog and sample it! YE OLDE SMUGGLERS INNE: The team are in Alfriston, East Sussex, hunting for vintage contraband. Today Alfriston is a picture postcard pretty village, but it was once the centre of the infamous Sussex badlands. Our pair s journey back in time takes in some unexpected finds along the way, among them butcher s bones, ossified poo and artefacts dating from before Stonehenge. As they dig down below the 20th-century concrete in the beer garden, the team begin to turn up piece after piece of Victorian junk, revealing the life of the 19th-century inhabitants. There are farmed oyster shells, simple pottery and sawn bone evidence of butchery, the day job of a famous local smuggler, Stanton Collins. However, there is no smuggler s loot. So they turn to examining the building itself. Tales of custom-built escape routes for smugglers to evade customs officers abound, so the team scour the architecture for evidence. THE SIX BELLS: The team are digging up the car park of Six Bells in St Albans, in search of Roman treasure. It is an excavation that will drill down through two thousand years of history, taking in the world of medieval pilgrimages and a recipe for nettle beer along the way! The ground under the pub is a good bet for archaeology as it lies within the walls of Roman Verulamium . But the first find is a little more recent: an 18th Century lime kiln that was used to build the beautiful row of houses that surround the pub. As the team continue digging, they uncover medieval remains of butchery, cooking and occupation from the 12th century, suggesting that this was once the site of a hostel built to feed hungry pilgrims on their way to pay homage at the great cathedral of St Albans, just up the road. As they dig deeper they find the remains of a massive Roman building decorated with vast quantities of paintedwall plaster.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers | Blu Ray | (18/11/2013)

| RRP In San Francisco everyone can hear Veronica (Alien) Cartwright scream. In the ultimate urban nightmare, to sleep is to die, to be replaced by a soulless alien duplicate. Less a remake of the 1956 classic of the same name, more a fresh vision of Jack Finney's source novel, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the archetypal story of humans supplanted by unemotional "vegetable pods". A masterstroke is the introduction of SF icon Leonard Nimoy as a very West Coast relationships guru determined to explain everything in terms of urban psychological alienation, and the story does prove more unsettling on the big city's forbidding streets. This is very much an ensemble movie, with outstanding performances from Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams, and what proved to be the first of several key genre roles for Jeff (The Fly, Jurassic Park, Independence Day) Goldblum. With minimal effects and very little gore, but filled with unnerving camera angles and a underpinned by a chillingly effective score, the film is relentlessly suspenseful, culminating in a sequence of terrifying set-pieces and a truly spine-tingling finale. More resonant with each passing year, the story was reworked in 1993 as Body Snatchers. On the DVD: While the print is more than acceptable there is a loss of detail and some shimmering artefacts in the very dark scenes. The disc is not anamorphically enhanced, which really should be a standard DVD feature. Still, the picture is considerably ahead of VHS and the stereo sound is highly unsettling. An eight-page booklet gives an intelligent overview of all three Body Snatchers movies, and director Phil Kaufman's commentary is packed with information. --Gary S. Dalkin

| RRP Winning Wimbledon I can't get my head around that. I still can't believe it's happened said Andy Murray after he convincingly beat Novak Djokovic to become Wimbledon 2013 Men's Champion. As he walked out onto Centre Court on 7th July 2013 the weight of expectation heavy on his shoulders Andy Murray knew what he had to do to become the first British champion since Fred Perry in 1936. A packed Centre Court crowd filled with sporting heroes politicians A list celebrities and lucky members of the public joined a nation who watched nervously on screens around the country. The temperature on Centre Court read 40°C on Britain's hottest day of the year and the heat would make the final a gruelling contest for the world's top two players. The match scorecard will show a straight sets win; 6-4 7-5 6-4 but it was never that easy. This was a hard brutal contest between two tennis gladiators. Murray took the first set decisively but the second seemed to be going to Djokovic until Murray came back from 1-4 to level and then serve for the set. In the third set Murray was up two sets with a break - victory was in sight but then his opponent the world number 1 broke and then broke again. But Murray broke back to level the set and broke again so all that remained was for him to hold serve to become champion. It was apt that Murray made us wait in the end. It would have been too easy for him to win with one of his three match points and wipe away the memories of the past eight years. In a final 12 minute game which Murray described as 'tortuous' the nation held its breath as Djokovic fought back to 40-40 to give himself the slimmest of chances. After a thirteen point march from 40-0 by his opponent Murray's imperious defence a key to his success got him into position to set up a forehand winner at deuce and Djokovic finally surrendered putting a backhand shot into the net. The nation had dared to dream and Murray made that dream a reality taking his rightful place among the nation's sporting greats. Last year Murray said I'm getting closer! - this year Great Britain has a new hero and the nation can finally celebrate... This DVD set is the complete coverage of the Wimbledon Championship Men's Singles Final and Andy Murray's historic victory over Novak Djokovic. Your chance to own a piece of history.
