  Senegalese director Ousmane Sembène was the first sub-Saharan African filmmaker to achieve international recognition and is widely regarded as 'the father of African cinema'. His first major work, Black Girl, is a sophisticated drama which won the 1966 Prix Jean Vigo, and which tells the story of Diouanne (Thérèse M'Bisine Diop), a young Senegalese woman eager to find a better life and who takes a job as a governess for a bourgeois French family. Mistreated by her employers, Diouanne's hopes turn to disillusionment and she descends into a state of isolation and despair. Sembène draws from the Nouvelle Vague, but the film's heart and soul is most definitely African. Sembène's directional debut, the short Borom Sarret, was the first ever indigenous black African film. An allegorical tale exploring poverty and inequality, it follows the difficult life of a hard-up cart driver in Dakar.

  Queen Elizabeth II - the sixth queen regnant and 63rd sovereign of Britain. As constitutional monarch, she has advised twelve Prime Ministers, from Churchill to Cameron. As head of state, she has travelled widely at the request of the British government of the day. Around a third of her overseas visits have been to the Commonwealth. She is Queen in sixteen countries as well as being Head of the Commonwealth, a free association of 53 countries. After the storms of the 1990's and the loss of her mother and sister ten years ago, the Queen will end her reign in happier times. Her grandchildren bring a promise of a restored future for the monarchy, celebrated by the events of the Diamond Jubilee.

Scenes of Gerda's search through the lush temptations of each season personified are interspersed with downright creepy scenes of Kai held prisoner in the Snow Queen's ice palace.

  Lava has taken a long time to get to the cinemas. Unjustifiably, really. It is a funny, well-acted movie. It is hyper-violent, but most of the violence is off-camera. And Joe Tucker's Smiggy character has some inspired, loopy moments of byplay. Look out for the 'You talkin' to me?' Taxi-driver hommage. Hilarious.
