For Renton, every day's the same. Nothing happens, nothing changes. He goes to school, he goes home. The only thing that keeps him happy is lifting on his ref board. Then one day, a giant mecha called an LFO comes crashing down on him - literally. Inside is the most beautiful girl he has ever seen! The thing is, the girl is on the run from the military with her stolen mecha, and she's brought trouble with her. Renton will have to summon up all his courage to face his childhood hero; get the girl he's hopelessly smitten with to like him; and - oh yeah - live up to the legacy of his father who saved the world. But hey, at least it's not boring anymore. Contains episodes 1 to 26 on Blu-Ray with both the English dub and the original Japanese track with English subtitles. Extras: Episodes 1-26
What The Devil Hath Joined Together Let No Man Cut Asunder! Before 1973, Brian De Palma was impossible to pigeonhole: he made comedies, political satires and openly experimental pieces. But with Sisters (originally released as Blood Sisters in the UK) he turned to the suspense thriller and discovered his natural home and a style that would lead directly to later masterpieces like Carrie, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out. When Danielle (Margot Kidder) meets potential boyfriend Philip (Lisle Wilson) after appearing on the TV show Peeping Toms (a nod to the Michael Powell shocker), she invites him home, only to attract the ire of her twin sister Dominique. From across the courtyard, Rear Window style, reporter Grace (Jennifer Salt) witnesses Philip being murdered by one of the twins but the police find no body or any physical evidence. Naturally, Grace takes things into her own hands, and discovers more about the sisters' relationship than she bargained for Strongly influenced by Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski, and with a score by the great Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, Psycho), Sisters was the first true Brian De Palma film. Beneath the surface of Pearl Harbor lies Japan's ultimate killing machine. Nova dives beneath the waters of Pearl Harbor to trace provocative new clues to one of the most tragic events of World War II - the sinking of the USS Arizona - where more than 1 000 crew members perished in the greatest loss of life in United States naval history. For decades it has been thought that a bomb dropped by a Japanese aircraft sank the Arizona. But the discovery of a group of Japanese midget subs in and around Pearl Harbor has raised questions about the battleship's final hours. In this programme Nova's team of expert investigators journeys to the seafloor to explore the wreckage of the most mysterious of these subs. Did this mini-sub and its two-person crew make it into Pearl Harbor and fire torpedoes at the Arizona? Nova pursues this puzzle with unprecedented access to the remains of the Arizona and other unique evidence including aerial photos taken by Japanese aircraft and moving testimonials from U.S. and Japanese veterans. Killer Subs in Pearl Harbor is a gripping investigation into the possibility that these tiny but lethal mini-subs may have played a crucial and previously unsuspected part in the tragic events of that 'Day of Infamy.'
For devoted fans and nonfans alike, Spider-Man offers nothing less--and nothing more--than what you'd expect from a superhero blockbuster. Having proven his comic-book savvy with the original Darkman, director Sam Raimi brings ample energy and enthusiasm to Spidey's origin story, nicely establishing high-school nebbish Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as a brainy outcast who reacts with appropriate euphoria--and well-tempered maturity--when a "super-spider" bite transforms him into the amazingly agile, web-shooting Spider-Man. That's all well and good, and so is Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girl-next-door sweetheart. Where Spider-Man falls short is in its hyperactive CGI action sequences, which play like a video game instead of the gravity-defying exploits of a flesh-and-blood superhero. Willem Dafoe is perfectly cast as Spidey's schizoid nemesis, the Green Goblin, and the movie's a lot of fun overall. It's no match for Superman and Batman in bringing a beloved character to the screen, but it places a respectable third. --Jeff Shannon
