Between 1956 and 1960, director Budd Boetticher, and star Randolph Scott made a series of remarkable, slyly subversive, studio-produced westerns that brought a new spark to the genre and became known as the ˜Ranown Cycle'. In The Tall T, co-starring Richard Boone, Maureen O'Sullivan and Henry Silva, Scott is a rancher kidnapped along with an heiress, and held for ransom by three murderous outlaws. A ruthlessly efficient western thriller, The Tall T established the success of the Scott/Boetticher team. Budd Boetticher's collaborations with star Randolph Scott are ostensibly small-scale B-movies, but are now revered as some of the finest adult westerns produced in that period. Tom Buchanan (Scott) is a man returning to his Texas home, who rides into a feud between several members of the criminal Agry family. When he helps a young Mexican take revenge on one of them, Buchanan soon finds himself up against the whole Agry clan. • The Cameraman (1928) (Criterion Collection) UK Only [Blu-ray] [2020]The Cameraman (1928) (Criterion Collection) UK Only | Blu Ray | (20/07/2020) from £10.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

BUSTER KEATON (The General) is at the peak of his slapstick powers in The Cameramanthe first film that the silent-screen legend made after signing with MGM, and his last great masterpiece. The final work over which he maintained creative control, this clever farce is the culmination of an extraordinary, decadelong run that produced some of the most innovative and enduring comedies of all time. Keaton plays a hapless newsreel cameraman desperate to impress both his new employer and his winsome office crush as he zigzags up and down Manhattan hustling for a scoop. Along the way, he goes for a swim (and winds up soaked), becomes embroiled in a Chinatown Tong War, and teams up with a memorable monkey sidekick (the famous Josephine). The marvellously inventive film-within-a-film setup allows Keaton's imagination to run wild, yielding both sly insights into the travails of moviemaking and an emotional payoff of disarming poignancy. • Hiroshima [Blu-ray]Hiroshima | Blu Ray | (13/07/2020) from £16.39   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Hiroshima (1953) is a powerful evocation of the devastation wrought by the world's first deployment of the atomic bomb and its aftermath, based on the written eye-witness accounts of its child survivors compiled by Dr. Arata Osada for the 1951 book Children Of The A Bomb: Testament Of The Boys And Girls Of Hiroshima. Adapted for the screen by independent director Hideo Sekigawa (Listen to the Voices of the Sea, Tokyo Untouchable) and screenwriter Yasutaro Yagi (Theatre of Life, Rice), Hiroshima combines a harrowing documentary realism with moving human drama, in a tale of the suffering, endurance and survival of a group of teachers, their students and their families. It boasts a rousing score composed by Akira Ifukube (Godzilla) and an all-star cast including Yumeji Tsukioka (Late Spring, The Eternal Breasts), Isuzu Yamada (Throne of Blood, Yojimbo) and Eiji Okada (Hiroshima Mon Amour, Woman in the Dunes), appearing alongside an estimated 90,000 residents from the city as extras, including many survivors from that fateful day on 6th August 1945. Hiroshima was produced and distributed outside of the studio system by the Japan Teachers' Union following the mixed critical reception to Children of Hiroshima (1952), directed by Kaneto Shindo the previous year, the first dramatic feature to deal directly with the atomic bombing. Although sequences from the film were used in Alain Resnais' classic of French New Wave cinema, Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), it has been effectively out of circulation in Japan and the rest of the world since its original release in 1953 due to the force and political sensitivity of its message. This new High Definition presentation is the complete version, restoring the footage from the international edit that was released in the United States in 1955.
