Six tough, no-nonsense noirs from six of the genre's toughest, no-nonsense directors: Budd Boetticher's Escape in the Fog, in which a nurse and a war veteran take on Nazi spies in San Francisco; Joseph H Lewis' The Undercover Man, inspired by the real-life case against Al Capone; Richard Quine's Drive a Crooked Road, which finds Mickey Rooney moving away from comedies and musicals to a tougher persona; Phil Karlson's 5 Against the House, starring Kim Novak as a nightclub singer embroiled in a casino heist; Vincent Sherman's The Garment Jungle, from which Kiss Me Deadly director Robert Aldrich was famously fired; and Don Siegel's police procedural The Lineup, based on the radio and television series, and as brutal a film as he ever made. Ronny Yu (The Phantom Lover; Warriors Of Virtue; The Bride of Chucky) directs this highly operatic fable based on a well-known martial arts novel with Leslie Cheung (A Better Tomorrow; Farewell, My Concubine) and Brigitte Lin (Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain; Police Story) as doomed lovers caught in the crossfire of warring clans. Cheung plays Zhuo Yihang, a rebellious but extremely talented swordsman of the Wudang Sect (aka the Wu-Tang Clan, a fictional martial arts sect that appears in many wuxia novels and films). Collection of five films written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. 'Reservoir Dogs' (1992) is set during the aftermath of a robbery which has gone violently wrong. Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth and Steve Buscemi are amongst the stars making up the team of robbers, Mr White, Mr Blonde, Mr Orange and Mr Pink, who meet at a warehouse after the failed heist and attempt to work out who is to blame. In 'Jackie Brown' (1997) air stewardess Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) smuggles money on the side for gunrunner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). When she is caught with $50,000 and a consignment of cocaine, she makes a deal with Ordell: if convicted, she will not shop him as long as he pays her $100,000. Meanwhile Jackie also makes a deal with the cops, promising to help convict Ordell, and enlists the help of bail bond man Max Cherry (Robert Forster) in a daring attempt to outwit both the police and Ordell. 'Pulp Fiction' (1994) melds three dime-store stories set in lowlife LA into one cohesive thriller. Butch (Bruce Willis) is an over-the-hill boxer paid to take a fall, who instead does a runner with mobster Merselius (Ving Rhames)'s money. Meanwhile, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winfield (Jackson) are two hitmen who aren't having the easiest of mornings, and Pumpkin and Honey Bunny (Roth and Amanda Plummer) are two would-be bank robbers who are planning a heist in a restaurant. In 'Kill Bill: Volume 1' (2003), Uma Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When she decides to get married and leave the outfit her boss, Bill (David Carradine), is not a happy man and gets her former colleagues to show up at the wedding; leaving behind a blood bath and The Bride shot in the head. Four years later, The Bride sets out on a journey of revenge. In 'Kill Bill: Volume 2' (2004), having dispensed with some of her former colleagues, The Bride (Thurman) resumes her quest for justice. She now has two remaining foes on her 'Death List', Budd (Madsen) and Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) - before she moves on to her ultimate goal - to kill Bill (Carradine).
