Set in the ancient English city of York, Eternal Law is about angels living amongst us, helping and guiding humans when they are at their most desperate. The series starts with one grumpy, seen-it-all-a-million times angel called Zak arriving to start a fresh tour of duty with his new colleague, the constantly amazed neophyte, Tom, who has never before spent time with humans. They live in a ramshackle house stuffed with books and paintings, where they are looked after by the beautiful, mysterious Mrs Sheringham. We discover that in his previous tour of duty Zak did a terrible, completely forbidden thing - he fell in love with a human woman, Hannah. To his horror he realises that Hannah has been put in York to tempt him, to test him. Although he loves her with every fibre of his body he knows he can never be with her. It is a cruel, bruised, aching romance. There are angels in all walks of life but our angels are lawyers. Which means that - every episode - they have to deal with humans at their lowest and most exposed. It could be a man standing trial for murder; a bitter custody battle; a fight to save an Old People's home; a frightened young squaddie accused of cowardice. Our angels strive their best to fight for their clients, to win their cases, to put them back on the straight and narrow. They don't always win but they always fight to the last.Eternal Law is emotional, funny, fresh. Each episode ends with Zak and Tom high up on York Minster, wings out, sharing a bottle of wine and talking about this week's case. They find human beings complicated, contradictory, vain, baffling, greedy, passionate, illogical... and utterly, compellingly wonderful.

  • And A Nightingale Sang [DVD]And A Nightingale Sang | DVD | (06/11/2017) from £7.75   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Adapted by celebrated screenwriter Jack Rosenthal (Coronation Street) from C. F. Taylor's acclaimed play of the same name, And a Nightingale Sang struck a chord with audiences when it first aired for its bittersweet, sharply observant and humorous portrait of working-class family life on the British Home Front during World War Two. Despite air raid sirens, gas masks, ration books and whistling bombs punctuating their everyday lives, the Stott family remain stoic as they focus on keeping life as normal as possible. Helen Stott is the family's sensible 30-year-old daughter: a kindly yet self-deprecating girl who walks with a limp, whose life so far has not been very kind to her. Surprised to find love during the chaos of war, she falls for gentle soldier Norman. However, the course of true love runs less than smoothly Starring Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey) as the pitiful Helen Stott, and Tom Watt (Eastenders) as the soldier who steals her heart. Helen's flirty younger sister Joyce is played by Pippa Hinchley (Coronation Street), who is attracted to every solider apart from her own husband (Stephen Tompkinson DCI Banks). John Woodvine (The Crown) also features as the Stott family's father, preferring to escape awkward family situations by banging out popular tunes on the piano than face conflict, and Oscar-nominee Joan Plowright (Enchanted April) as the devoutly Catholic family matriarch, who finds herself drawn to her priest. The DVD will also feature fascinating extras in the form of three real wartime public information films, giving insight into the unrivalled efforts on the British Home Front, from the Imperial War Museum: They Keep the Wheels Turning (1942), Britannia is a Woman (1940) and The New Britain (1940).

For decades the Cold War prevented the world from truly understanding the events that unfolded between the Russians and Germans on the Eastern Front during WWII. Far more than a struggle between nations, it pitted tyrant against tyrant and evil ideology against evil ideology as the lives of tens on millions were consumed by the conflict. One in 10 Russians died. One in four Poles died. And whole divisions of Italians, Romanians and Hungarians disappeared without a trace. On average, 17,800 people died every single day and the war on the Russian/German front lasted for 1,400 days. A good explanation of weapons, tactics, and personalities, set against the larger picture of cruelty, fanatical bravery, and political intrigue . The series is recommended for viewers with a strong interest in military history. Video Librarian First broadcast on Canadian television in 1995, this series featured German and Russian film footage that has never before been seen outside those countries. Narrated by Douglas Rain (the voice of HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey) with a powerful script, this 2 disc DVD offers a rare look at one of the darkest horror stories in the history of warfare. The sweeping musical score composed by Rick Hyslop (The Passion of the Christ) only adds to the drama, and captures every nuance of the tragedy.
