In this series, Dr. John 'Thack' Thackery (Clive Owen) is receiving treatment for his drug addiction which includes the administering of heroin. Spiralling from one addiction to another, Thackery is unable to return to his position as chief surgeon in the hospital. When Edwards (André Holland), acting chief of surgery, learns he has a detached retina as a result of his bar brawls, he struggles to win the sympathy of the hospital board. Fellow surgeon Everett Gallinger (Eric Johnson) is outraged to discover Edwards has taken the top spot, which had been promised to him by Thackery. He decides drastic intervention is necessary to return Thack to his position in the hospital.   During the Second World War the German Navy boasted a massive number of U-Boats to cope with the Allied naval threat and to disrupt the much needed supplies from reaching the front lines. During the entirety of the war Germany built over 1 100 of them in their attempt to conquer the seas with almost 800 of these being destroyed by Allied cruisers and aircraft before the end of the war. As well as the construction of smaller U-Boats for the coastal areas oceangoing U-Boats were also built. The U-Boat type VII became the standard built in several variations including the VII A VII B and finally the legendary VIIC.

Paul Rogers is the clan 's malevolent patriarch and Ian Holm is the amusing but insidious Lenny while Vivien Merchant 's Ruth is both hypnotic and captivating. This is Harold Pinter 's masterpiece perfectly brought to the big screen by Sir Peter Hall. Pinter's Progress: A personal take on working with Harold Pinter from intimate conversations with actors directors and writers on their experiences of the man and his work. One of the truly great modern playwrights Harold Pinter passed away on Christmas Eve 2008 leaving behind a great legacy of work in theatre and film.
