The Hard Stop is an intimate documentary revealing the story, away from all press coverage, of Mark Duggan's friends and family following his death. He was shot and killed in a Hard Stop' police procedure in 2011, sparking the most violent riots in British history. For 28 months, director George Amponsah (The Fighting Spirit) filmed around Broadwater Farm in Tottenham, where Duggan grew up, capturing his family's distress and focusing on two of his best friends, Marcus Knox and Kurtis Henville. We follow the men closely as they attempt to get on with their lives, look for a job, talk about the discrimination they experience on a daily basis and the impact Duggan's death has had on the community. Duggan is present throughout, in people's testimonies and news broadcasts. What emerges is a profoundly humane, thought-provoking and topical testament, which gives a voice to people who are rarely heard.

Roy Urqhart's escape from ArnhemMajor-General Roy Urquhart was a magnificent soldier - ferocious in battle and yet always protective of his men. He had just one weakness. Flying made him sick. He was therefore a truly odd choice to be put in command of the 1st Airborne division - the Paras. When he led the doomed British attack on Arnhem he found himself overwhelmed outnumbered and trapped. How he and his driver made it back across the River Rhine escaping shells and German patrols is one of the great epics of personal bravery. Breakout through Hell's GateHe was the outstanding Russian General who had captured a huge German army at Stalingrad - and he was hungry for more. Marshal Georgiy Zhukov was brilliant ruthless and loved killing Germans. And it looked like he had done it again. 60 000 German soldiers were trapped their backs against theRiver Dnieper as three million Russians moved in. But this time Zhukov was up against a very unusual kind of Nazi. Leon Degrelle wasn't German at all. He was Belgian - a failed politician who in his devotion to the Fuhrer had become a grunt soldier in an SS regiment. Together with a motley mixture of Finns Estonians and fellow Belgians - he would hold off the might of Zhukov's army enabling 56 000 men to escape. Morshead holds TobrukLeslie Morshead is Australia's greatest general. Known as 'Ming the Merciless' to his troops for eight weeks he and his Aussie troops held off the might of German General Erwin' Rommel's Afrika Korps at the key port of Tobruk. Surrounded by Germans Morshead decided that the best form of defence was attack. For eight weeks his men repelled the Germans one soldier even bayoneting to death an entire German patrol. The films features the extraordinary recollections of Sergeant Ray Ellis who manned a howitzer throughout the siege. Moore's MarchHow desperate does have a man to be to suck the blood out of his own arm? That's just one of the astonishing pieces of personal testimony given by Alex Winchester a Scottish soldier who survived walking over 200 miles through the Libyan desert. Moore's March occurred when a patrol of the Long Range Desert Group was caught behind enemy lines. Trooper Ronald Moore a tough New Zelander then led three men including Winchester back to safety through 50 degree heat with almost no water or supplies. On the way they entered Special Forces legend. Operation PedestalFeaturing never seen before footage of the actual events this film tells the story of how Dudley Mason a quiet sea captain from Surbiton won the George Cross for his role in the relief of Malta. In one of the most remarkable voyages in history he was part of a convoy that fought its way through five solid days of massed German attacks by air and sea from Gibraltar all the way to Malta. His ship The Ohio was appallingly damaged but Mason managed to bring it into harbour in Malta floating with the assistance of two destroyers and unload its precious cargo of oil. The ship sank immediately afterwards - on camera. Evacuation in the BalticIt was the biggest evacuation of World War Two - three times bigger than Dunkirk. Over 2 million civilian and soldiers soldiers were spirited away from under the noses of the Red Army and the Royal Navy in an extraordinary German operation. It lasted for over four months finishing on the very last day of the war. This film contains the deeply moving memories of Horst Woit who was then just ten years old and who survived the worst maritime disaster in history when the ship taking him to Germany was torpedoed.
Unseen for over 50 years and thought lost forever, the missing episode of beloved classic BBC drama Dr. Finlay's Casebook has now been fully restored and made available for fans to cherish for the first time. Simply Media is delighted to announce the first ever Home Entertainment release of BBC's Dr. Finlay's Casebook A Questionable Practice: The Lost Classic, on DVD and available to download on Vimeo OD 17th April 2017. Believed lost forever from the BBC's archives, this piece of television history was miraculously recovered by Kaleidoscope and, at the request of our fans, made available to see again for the first time in over 50 years. The episode has been fully restored by the Doctor Who restoration team in time for the show's 55th anniversary this year. Based on A. J. Cronin's semi-autobiographical novella Country Doctor, the much-loved and memorable, long-running drama series Dr. Finlay's Casebook was aired by the BBC between 1962 and 1971, and very soon after it premiered in 1962, it quickly became one of the cornerstones of BBC drama at the time, amassing around 12 million viewers during its first series. Unfortunately, many of its episodes remain missing, although Simply Media have released what remains of this TV landmark on DVD. Set in the fictional Scottish town of Tannochbrae, the stories centre around the town's pre-NHS general medical practice, its residents, and the fascinating relationship between the young and forward thinking Dr. Finlay (Bill Simpson) and his traditional but highly pragmatic mentor and boss Dr. Cameron (Andrew Cruickshank). One of the most interesting aspects of the series was the ongoing friction between the two doctors and the disagreements they had. Finlay would propose new modern medical treatments to try, which Cameron would be sceptical of using on their patients, and the series looked at the consequences such treatment would have. The series is also remembered for not shying away from controversial issues at the time, such as abortion and poverty. The tension between Finlay and Cameron reaches crisis point in this dramatic episode A Questionable Practice. Dr. Finlay is exhausted after a lengthy flu epidemic, but when he requests a holiday Dr. Cameron declares that a break from work is a sign of Finlay's questionable dedication to the profession. Argument ensues, and the long hours of running the doctor's surgery and managing the health and wellbeing of the village's challenging patients causes Finlay to consider his future.... This DVD also contains a fascinating promo where you can view the un-restored and restored versions of this television classic side-by-side, giving an excellent insight as to the vast improvements restoration work has made to this lost television gem.

Based on the play by Jim Morris. Blood on the Dole follows the lives of four teenagers, two boys and two girls, struggling to cope after being thrust into the real world for the first time after leaving school. Living in deprived Merseyside, the four youths' bright-eyed optimism for their futures and new-found freedom is soon crushed by the realities of unemployment, poverty, and the brutal reality of living and trying to find work in a city in decline. They all soon find themselves in the hopeless situation of facing complete dependence on state handouts, the dole . The four teenagers instead find themselves turning to each other to find the strength to survive. An impressively fresh social commentary and portrayal of teenage love set within a disturbingly authentic account of disenfranchised youth. With austerity still very much a part of our political climate, and recent films such as I, Daniel Blake continuing to challenge such government policy, Blood on the Dole is still a hugely relevant watch today. Produced by BAFTA-winner Alan Bleasdale as a part of the Alan Bleasdale Presents series, a Channel 4 anthology showcasing and given a platform to new, up-and-coming talent young writers. After his successes in landmark dramas including Boys from the Black Stuff, The Monocled Mutineer and GBH, in 1994 Channel 4 gave Alan Bleasdale the opportunity to find and mentor new TV writers. Four big-budget, standalone films were made as a result, with top casts and experimental storylines.

Long-awaited, long-overdue: The Professionals as you have never seen them before. Bodie and Doyle need little by way of introduction, but if the series had at all escaped you since its debut in 1977 their boss George Cowley, head of CI5, couldn't put it more succinctly than his opening gambit: anarchy, acts of terror, crimes against the public. To combat it I've got special men experts from the army, the police, from every service. These are The Professionals . Featuring the perfect ensemble cast of Martin Shaw, Gordon Jackson (completely against type here) and the much-missed Lewis Collins, the series ran for 57 action-packed episodes and made an immediate impact on British and then international audiences which has sustained 35 years. Based on Caroline Graham's novels and featuring the stolid crime-solving skills of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby, Midsomer Murders made their television debut in 1997 and continue to keep viewers happy with that potent whodunnit ingredient: spectacularly bloody murders in the most tranquil rural settings the Shires have to offer. Midsomer is a vaguely defined area of villages and hamlets with charming names like Badger's Drift and Goodman's Land. It also has the highest number of violent deaths per capita outside the average war zone. Serial killings abound to test the nerve of Barnaby (John Nettles) and his sidekick Sergeant Troy (Daniel Casey), a dullard easily perplexed by a world which refuses to stick to his black and white view of things. Nettles is excellent; there's a hint of Bergerac still, now heavier of jowl and broader of beam, though the chasing is necessarily limited and the DCI enjoys the home comforts of an understanding wife and a spirited daughter. "Every time I go into any Midsomer village, it's always the same thing", he huffs. "Blackmail, sexual deviancy, suicide and murder." Ain't it the truth? The murders are astonishing. Family feuds, jealousy, incest, industrial espionage, all erupt at regular intervals leaving a trail of bodies with throats slashed, limbs dismembered and blood absolutely everywhere. Rivers of sheer nastiness run deep beneath the superficially pastoral perfection of Midsomer. Thank goodness there are still men like dependable Barnaby to get to the bottom of things. Eventually. Sure of Barnabys eventual success, Midsomer Murders make for a cosy, even comforting, couple of hours curled up in front of the television. And they make a great showcase for star turns from the great stable of British character actors, too, from Celia Imrie and Elizabeth Spriggs to Imelda Staunton and Duncan Preston, who invariably turn this whimsical stuff into the tastiest possible ham.--Piers Ford
