  Is there anything more definitively British than the 'greasy spoon' experience? Full English breakfasts mugs of mud coloured tea chipped formica tables signed publicity stills of now fading celebrities who may have strayed this way for a little (fried) slice of cafe life. It's arguably one of Britain's greatest traditions; especially when it's run by foreigners. Angelo's is a caf in the heart of London a short stroll from the tourist Mecca of Trafalgar Square the grandeur of Whitehall and the sex shops of sleazy Soho. This unique geographical location means it is also the meeting place for a whole motley crew of diverse deftly drawn characters from the imagination of writer Sharon Horgan (Pulling Annually Retentive). Heading up this unlikely gang is proprietor Angelo (played by Steve Brody) an Italian immigrant and proud Anglophile who wouldn't serve up any 'foreign muck' in his establishment. Angelo always provides a warm welcome to his patrons just as long as they don't spend all day sitting over one bloody coffee. He is ably assisted by his daughter Maria (Shelley Longworth) who far from being a willing waitress spends most of her day dreaming of being discovered by Simon Cowell and leaving this dump behind her. Never far behind is best friend Alicia (Alice Lowe) who like all true companions constantly undermines Maria and tries to steal her boyfriends. Then there's Karen and Dave (Sharon Horgan and Paul Garner) the local police community officers who seem to spend more time discussing their marital problems than doing any actual police work. Other regular fixtures include: Shelley (Miranda Hart) the man-hungry mini cab driver who is saving her virginity for Mr Right even if he's taken out a restraining order against her; Kris (Simon Farnaby) a classically trained out of work actor who dresses as a gold robot and mimes for pennies from tourists; and Russell (Kim Wall) who spends every day in Angelo's searching for a new employer before his wife finds out that he has been made redundant from his last job.

  The Trials of Life started as David Attenborough's most ambitious wildlife project, and ended as something really big. First came Life on Earth (1978), then The Living Planet (1984), but when The Trials of Life (1990) arrived the already epic individual series became "The Life Trilogy", collectively the most impressive documentary achievement in the history of television. Unfortunately the epic has shrunk here, as not only have the credits been removed, but each of the 12 original episodes having been cut from 49 minutes to 28 minutes (though the scene everyone remembers--a whale pursuing its prey right onto the beach--survives). Rather than focus on evolution or geography, the emphasis is on animal behaviour, from courting and mating, to giving birth and raising the young, hunting, flight and fighting, finding shelter, and migration. This immediacy makes The Trials of Life the most accessible of "The Life Trilogy" for younger children, though the abridgement makes it play like a superior schools programme. This short-attention-span version of a television masterpiece simply makes one wish for a fully restored, extra packed special edition of the complete series. David Attenborough would go on to make The Private Life of Plants and The Life of Birds. --Gary S Dalkin On the DVD: The Trials of Life has a good though slightly soft and grainy 4:3 picture that would benefit from remastering from the original elements. The stereo sound is a clear improvement over the originally broadcast mono, but a full 5.1 DTS remix would have brought out the best in the atmospheric natural location recording. The only extra is a 49-minute "making of" documentary, "Once More into the Termite House", originally shown as a companion to the series. Given a DVD all to itself, this programme offers a real insight into the challenges of making such a vast programme, while David Attenborough is as affable as ever. There are optional English and Greek subtitles on all three discs. --Gary S Dalkin

Showing how the children interpreted daily life in their drama classes, Kids About Town caught the eye of producer Roger Price (The Tomorrow People), who suggested the Anna Sher kids be given their own series. You must be joking! replied the controller of children's programming; That s what we ll call it, suggested Roger...A wry, energetic and irreverent comedy show of a kind never previously seen and certainly not one for the easily offended! You Must Be Joking duly launched an unknown bunch of kids onto the TV screen. Led by writer-performers Ray Burdis and John Blundell, and featuring future BAFTA winner (and drama academy founder) Pauline Quirke, the talented teenagers were 'supervised' by comedian and long-suffering lone adult Jim Bowen. In between topical and satirical sketches, Elvis Payne took a cynical look at the week's news, and live music came from youthful popsters Flintlock, led by the multi-talented Michael Holoway. Many of the show's stars would go on to enjoy successful careers in television.
