  Season 1 review: The US TV schedules have never been shy of legal thrillers, and at first glance, The Good Wife is the kind of show that might easily blend into the crowd. And yet is has some key assets in its corner that lift it into something altogether more interesting. The key asset to The Good Wife is Julianna Marguiles in the lead role of Alicia Florrick. Not long after we meet her, we discover that her life has been blown apart by the actions of her husband. Thus, in the middle of her life, she has to restart her career as a junior at a law firm, where she finds herself competing against the younger, fresher graduates. It’s an interesting dynamic, and one that’s strengthened enormously by some terrific writing and thoughtful cases. For it’s the storytelling that’s the other main strength of The Good Wife, and that’s likely to keep you gripped right the way through this maiden season. Granted, there’s a feeling that it often covers ground that many shows have got to before. Yet The Good Wife puts a strong enough spin on the formula to emerge as a quality TV show in its own right. --Jon Foster

  In Victor Meldrew, One Foot in the Grave brought us one of the greatest characters in the history of British situation comedy. Victor is a superannuated security guard struggling to fill his premature retirement usefully, but he is frustrated at every turn. Coincidences, external forces and events and other people conspire against him. Somehow or other, he always gets the blame, leaving a trail of walking wounded in his wake, usually led by his long-suffering wife Margaret. This first series, originally transmitted in 1990, contains countless comic moments, many of them truly surreal. But Victor is never a one-dimensional target for our laughter. Indeed, as with the best comedy, we mock him at our peril. None of us get through life without our share of Meldrew moments. Thanks to Richard Wilson's performance--which rightly made him a major television star--he is a rounded human being who genuinely can't understand why he is constantly at odds with the world around him, despite his best efforts. And in Annette Crosbie as the increasingly enraged Margaret, he has the perfect screen partner. --Piers Ford

Throw in some Roman re-enactment some black market steroids the death of one of Griffin’s friends and a difficult reunion between Steve and his father and you have another compelling ten episodes of New Tricks.
