Eventually Ren galvanizes the youth of Bomont to confront the town's narrow-mindedness and in doing so he forces Rev. Moore to re-examine his own relationships with his daughter with his congregation and with his wife of 20 years. Carl Foreman's screenplay embraces MacLean's role call of clichés and delivers them with style, creating one of the liveliest mixes of espionage, combat and good old-fashioned military derring-do put on film.
