This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire--and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that decimates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles--rightfully so, as it turns out--that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride. --Tom Keogh
Melanesian Nightmare: In July 1942 Japan pinpointed Port Moresby on the island of New Guinea as an essential objective the capture of which would open the floodgates to the rest of Melanesia and more crucially Australia. Over the following months Japanese efforts to secure the Black Islands would meet with stiff Allied resistance and dogged determination. Roman Renaissance: After four years of conflict Hitler's Pact Of Steel was fast melting away as Italian frailty and failure became an all too familiar scenario leading to Italy signing an armistice in September 1943. Now fighting alone Germany was quick to turn Italy into a formidable fortress - one she would defend to the death. D-Day: The liberation of Europe would require an assault on an unprecedented scale against fortifications which had been years in the assembling and an enemy intent on repulsing any form of attack. Yet on the 6th June 1944 an Allied invasion force stormed the beaches at Normandy and gained the first all-important foothold on the west coast of Europe. Killers And The Killed: Despite mounting success on land German dominancy in the Atlantic was a cold reality which the Allied Forces had to address if final victory was to be achieved. U-Boats roamed the waters killing at will and sinking millions of pounds of vital supplies crippling the Allied war effort. Air supremacy was the key to combating the underwater threat and to winning the battle for the Atlantic.
David Lynch creator of Twin Peaks and acclaimed director of 'Eraserhead' 'Blue Velvet' and 'Wild At Heart' directs this bizarre but true story of courage and human dignity. John Hurt gives the performance of a lifetime as John Merrick the worst freak known to Victorian medical science a man whose body is hideously distorted into a grotesque parody of an elephant. Rescued from a travelling freak show by Sir Frederick Treves Merrick gradually reveals himself to be a strangely sweet and gentle man remarkably unembittered by the degradation and torment he suffered at the circus. Beautifully shot by Freddie Francis and with an excellent supporting cast including Sir John Gielgud Anne Bancroft and Dame Wendy Hiller The Elephant Man is a compelling moving and enchanting story. The film was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture Best Director and Best Actor.

You Got Served has one simple priority, and if you're into the latest hip-hop dance moves, you'll get served an enjoyable 93-minute diversion. For anyone else, however, all bets are off, since this wretchedly plotted film was written by director Christopher B. Stokes as a crassly commercial vehicle for B2K, the teen group that Stokes managed while making cheap movies like this one. There's a tissue-thin romantic subplot, but mostly it's about the MTV-styled showdown between B2K (as Orange County white boys) and their black LA competitors, including members of the hip-hop group IMx. Their aggressive moves are undeniably impressive (in other words, don't try this at home unless you know a good chiropractor), but Stokes would've been better off making a straight documentary. --Jeff Shannon

Shyam is losing his girl friend because his career is going nowhere as he trudges his way around in a call center. His girl friend, Priyanka, is also an agent like him at the call center who is about to be snatched by an NRI technogeek. There is also the aspiring model, Esha, who is hoping for the break that seems to be always already eluding her and the man about town, Vroom, who is into well, things. The housewife, Radhika, who is constantly at the receiving end of her mother-in-law and a beleaguered grandfather, Military Uncle, who has been barred from interacting with his grandchild make up the rest of the call agents who see their worlds crumbling around them as the decisions of right sizing are conveyed by Bakshi, the boss. It is a night when dreams will finally crumble. Or will it? For there is that call from God. The Turkey Shoot: The capture of the poorly fortified and underprepared American territory of Guam in 1941 helped Japanese forces tighten their grip on Micronesia. After two and a half years of occupation punctuated with unspeakable atrocities Allied warships finally breached the Japanese wall of steel and targeted the liberation of the island. Across the waves the largest aircraft carrier battle in history was beginning to simmer as the Imperial Japanese Navy stumbled into a well orchestrated trap. Two If By Sea: Peleliu is a name unknown to many yet the battle which took place upon this small Pacific island in 1944 was one of the bloodiest of World War Two costing the lives of over 10 000 Japanese soldiers. The liberation of the small neighbouring island of Angaur was yet another hard-fought encounter against an enemy for whom surrender was not an option. The Battle For Leyte Gulf: As the US Navy's 3rd and 7th Fleets powered their way across the Pacific Ocean to aid in the liberation of the Philippines few of the sailors on board could have foreseen or imagined the scale of the battle they were about to be consumed by. Loss of the Philippines meant an end to vital supply changes and so Japan committed the entire remains of her naval fleet in a last fatal role of the dice. Return Of The Allies: The Japanese occupation of the Philippines has become synonymous with a brutal regime forced upon an unwilling population and war crimes on a grand scale. In late 1944 the Allies re-entered the region with an irresistible fighting force and one goal in mind - it liberate the Philippines. On land sea and in the air a monumental military operation pushed the Japanese Imperial Forces to the brink of collapse. Full Fathom Five: World War Two saw the submarine emerge as a crucial and illusive weapon of destruction. Their crews had to acclimatise to cramped conditions long journeys and an entirely different strategy of war. Prowling the Pacific Ocean they targeted military and merchant shipping alike sinking countless tonnage that the Axis Forces were unable to replace or recover.

Inspired by cinematic classics including Mean Streets Do the Right Thing and The BAttle of Algiers Mattieu Kassovitz's La Haine is arguably the most incendiary provocative and prescient film to emerge from the 90s. Starkly shot in black and white capturing a Paris not seen on any tourist map the film deals with France's intolerance towards outsiders following Vinz (Vincent Cassel Irreversible Oceans 12) Hubert (Hubert Kounde) and Said (Said Taghmaoui Hideous Kinky Three Kings) three young men trapped in the Parisian economic ethnic and social underclass. In the decade since the film's release Europe has witnessed the rise in prominence of Far Right politics the increasing marginalisation of minorities and the growth of religious fundamentalism. Following the 2005 riots across France La Haine is now more relevant than ever in a continent which has finally woken up.
An ambitious salesman seeks a better life for him and his young son in this inspirational drama.
