As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in I, Robot. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; I, Robot, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks. Also featuring Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, and James Cromwell. --Bret Fetzer

On remote Isla Nuba entrepreneur John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has built the ultimate theme-park, populated by genetically engineered dinosaurs painstakingly reconstructed from DNA extracted from prehistoric amber... and, of course, frogs! Adapted from Michael Crichton's novel, Steven Spielberg's classic blockbuster became a cultural and commercial phenomenon thanks in part to the enduring appeal of all things prehistoric. But the film's extraordinarily realistic digital dinosaurs also showcased the spectacular computer-generated effects which have since become ubiquitous in Hollywood filmmaking. Indeed, in the years since 1993 it is debatable whether any film has revolutionised special effects to such an extent, and this DVD release offers the perfect opportunity to relive its visual and aural splendour (the film was also the first to be released with a DTS soundtrack). Given the rather insipid team of experts (including Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum) sent to approve Hammond's site, there is no doubt that the dinosaurs are the real stars of Spielberg's film. From the benign majesty of the towering brachiosaurus to the reptilian menace of the velociraptors, the inhabitants of Jurassic Park were a radical departure from their stop-motion predecessors, and remain compellingly real in their animalistic pursuit of survival at all costs. Most memorable of all is the T-rex, displaying a spine-chilling combination of physical ferocity and child-like bewilderment in the face of its reincarnation in the modern world. It was no surprise that in The Lost World sequel the T-rex once again took centre stage, but this first appearance still retains a unique power and a seminal place in film history. --Steve Napleton

How do you like your blockbuster movies? If the answers loud, fast and full of big robots fighting, then youre well and truly in luck. For director Michael Bays take on Transformers, based on the toys of the same name, delivers just that. And with some style. The film stars the fast-rising Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia) as Sam, who discovers that his first car has a little more to it when it transforms into an Autobot robot called Bumblebee. Fortunately, the Autobots are the good guys, and following not far behind are a good number more, headed up by Optimus Prime. Against them are the less friendly Decepticons, with Megatron at the helm, and the two sides are set for a frenetic battle right in the middle of Planet Earth. Theres a plot sitting underneath all of this, but its pretty much given with the Transformers movie that its just a vehicle to get the film from one set piece to another. And theres little denying that the action sequences are spectacular. Boasting quite staggering special effects, the on-screen action moves with a pace and ferocity that sometimes makes it hard just to keep up with it all, as mighty robots engage is some quite staggering fights. Its quite an achievement. Paving the way for an already-in-production sequel, Transformers has little pretensions about what its going to do, and is all the better for it. This is a film about big robots, big fights, big effects and, ultimately, big, dumb grin-inducing fun. What, really, is there not to like? --Jon Foster
There actually is no naked killer in Naked Killer but that's about all this mad, adults-only comic book action rollercoaster is missing. Flirty, feral Chingmy Yau gives an abusive jerk an impromptu vasectomy in front of cop Simon Yam, an impotent detective who vomits whenever he draws his gun. He's tracking a series of sex murders where all the male victims are missing their private organs when he falls in love with chief suspect Chingmy. She's subsequently recruited by the real killer, a hit-woman who targets rapists at large and practises on drooling sex-mad psychos chained up in the attic. When they finally head out for the real thing, they take out victims in a display of mid-air somersaults, cracking whips, flying ropes and flashing guns. This kind of foreplay attracts the lustful attentions of rival assassin Carrie Ng, a lesbian killer ready to abandon her purring sex kitten for the savage Chingmy. This is one of the most energetically gonzo Hong Kong logic-bombs ever made, a crazy melodrama that revels in absurd extravagance, sick humour (you may never eat link sausage again) and pure adrenaline driven displays of gymnastic action and orgiastic gunplay. Incoherence is a small price to pay for such guilty delights. --Sean Axmaker
