You know you're going to get a different kind of superhero when you cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. And Iron Man is different, in welcome ways. Cleverly updated from Marvel Comics' longstanding series, Iron Man puts billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (that's Downey) in the path of some Middle Eastern terrorists; in a brilliantly paced section, Stark invents an indestructible suit that allows him to escape. If the rest of the movie never quite hits that precise rhythm again, it nevertheless offers plenty of pleasure, as the renewed Stark swears off his past as a weapons manufacturer, develops his new Iron Man suit, and puzzles both his business partner (Jeff Bridges in great form) and executive assistant (Gwyneth Paltrow). Director Jon Favreau geeks out in fun ways with the hardware, but never lets it overpower the movie, and there's always a goofy one-liner or a slapstick pratfall around to break the tension. As for Downey, he doesn't get to jitterbug around too much in his improv way, but he brings enough of his unpredictable personality to keep the thing fresh. And listen up, hardcore Marvel mavens: even if you know the Stan Lee cameo is coming, you won't be able to guess it until it's on the screen. It all builds to a splendid final scene, with a concluding line delivery by Downey that just feels absolutely right. --Robert Horton

From a match made in heaven comes a movie spawned in hell! From Dusk Till Dawn sees young hotshot director Robert Rodriquez (El Mariachi, Desperado) team up with Pulp Fiction auteur Quentin Tarantino (offering his services as writer and costar) to make this outrageous, no-holds-barred hybrid of high-octane crime and gruesome horror. Tarantino plays Richard Gecko, a borderline psychopath who breaks his career-criminal brother, Seth (George Clooney), out of prison, after which they rob a bank and leave a trail of dead and wounded in their bloody wake. Then they hijack a mobile home driven by a former Baptist minister (Harvey Keitel) who quit the church after his wife's death and hit the road with his two children (played by Juliette Lewis and Ernest Liu). Heading to Mexico with their hostages, the infamous Gecko brothers arrive at the Titty Twister bar to rendezvous for a money drop, but they don't realise that they've just entered the nocturnal lair of a bloodthirsty gang of vampires! With not-so-subtle aplomb, Rodriguez and Tarantino shift into high gear with a non-stop parade of gore, gunfire and pointy-fanged mayhem featuring Salma Hayek as a snake-charming dancer whose bite is much worse than her bark. If you're a fan of Tarantino's lyrical dialogue and pop-cultural wit, you'll have fun with the road-film half of this supernatural horror-comedy, but if your taste runs more to exploding heads and eyeballs, sloppy entrails and morphing monsters, the second half provides a connoisseur's feast of gross-out excess. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • The Hornblower Collection (6 discs) [2002]The Hornblower Collection (6 discs) | DVD | (10/02/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £39.99

Based freely on the classic novels by CS Forester, Hornblower is a series of TV films following the progress of a young officer through the ranks of the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The series' greatest asset is the handsome and charismatic Ioan Gruffudd in the lead role, surely a major star in the making. For television films the production values are very good, though as Titanic, Waterworld and The Perfect Storm demonstrated, filming an aquatic adventure is a very expensive business, and it is clear that the Hornblower dramas simply make the best of comparatively small budgets. No more faithful to Forester's books than the 1951 Gregory Peck classic Captain Horatio Hornblower, the real inspiration seems to have come from the success of Sharpe, starring Sean Bean, which likewise featured a British hero in the Napoleonic Wars. Nevertheless, while rather more easygoing than the real British navy of the time, the Hornblower saga delivers an entertaining adventure, greatly enhanced by the presence of such guest stars as Denis Lawson, Cheri Lunghi, Ronald Pickup and Anthony Sher. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Sin City/Kill Bill Vol.1/Kill Bill Vol.2 [Blu-ray] [2003]Sin City/Kill Bill Vol.1/Kill Bill Vol.2 | Blu Ray | (04/05/2009) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £57.99

Sin City (2005): Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything... Welcome to Sin City. This town beckons to the tough the corrupt the brokenhearted. Some call it dark. Hard-boiled. Then there are those who call it home. Crooked cops. Sexy dames. Desperate vigilantes. Some are seeking revenge. Others lust after redemption. And then there are those hoping for a little of both. A universe of unlikely and reluctant heroes still trying to do the right thing in a city that refuses to care. Three stories - shocking suspenseful and searing - come to the fore in a new motion picture from co-directors Frank Miller (comics idol and author of the Sin City comics) and Robert Rodriguez - with special guest director Quentin Tarantino! Sin City was one of several films around the world to be shot on a completely digital backlot; with all the acting shot in front of a green screen and the backgrounds added during post-production). While the other movies Immortel (ad vitam) (2004) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) and Casshern (2004) were shot first Rodriguez's use of High-Definition digital cameras (like 'Sky Captain') in addition to the 'backlot' method makes Sin City one of the world's first 'fully-digital' live action motion pictures. Desperate to create Sin Cityas a translation rather than a 'Hollywood' adaptation Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller actually used the panels from the original comic books as storyboards for the movie. The visual style strongly echoes the comics throughout with the black and white footage broken up momentarily by splashes of colour in certain scenes - a similar effect was used in Pleasantville. Needless to say this all contributes to make - possibly - the greatest most authentic comic book 'translation' yet... Kill Bill (2004): Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! In part 1 of Quentin Tarantino's delirious revenge movie Uma Thurman plays 'The Bride' a woman seeking vengeance on those who massacred her wedding party... Inspired by countless Japanese swordplay actionfests (the classic Lady Snowblood among them) yakuza gangster thrillers (offering a cameo opportunity to genre icon Sonny Chiba) and Chinese martial arts movies (hence the knowing appearance of Jackie Chan contemporary Gordon Liu) Quentin Tarantino borrows from the best in order to shape his deliciously over the top cinematographic style into a simple but effective plot. Look out too for Battle Royale alumni Chiaki Kuriyama as Lucy Lui's weapon-wielding schoolgirl bodyguard and the gravel-voiced Shun Sugata (he of Ichi The Killer fame who also appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai). Homage? Pastiche? Kill Bill is not just for movie anoraks complete with all the super-smooth tunes that you'd expect from a Tarantino soundtrack it's definitely the most outrageously entertaining film yet from cinema's king of cool! Kill Bill 2 (2004): The second part of Quentin Tarantino's deliriously stylish movie as The Bride (Thurman) continues her typically blood-soaked revenge quest... Having killed two of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad The Bride continues her mission to avenge the three remaining names on her death list that turned her El Paso wedding party into bloody carnage and left her for dead. Her attention turns to Budd (Michael Madson) Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) and finally the corpse littered path leads to Bill (David Carradine). However an unexpected survivor complicates matters...

  • Once Upon A Time In China III [1993]Once Upon A Time In China III | DVD | (21/01/2002) from £10.97   |  Saving you £9.02 (45.10%)   |  RRP £19.99

Set in the era when China was just beginning to establish relations with Europe, Once upon a Time in China 3 is a mixture of politics, intrigue, broad comedy, and kung fu action. Charismatic Jet Li stars once again as Wong Fei-hung, a legendary Chinese hero who is a doctor, a pacifist, and an amazingly skilled martial artist. Like many Hong Kong films, this movie has a woefully complicated plot: in summary, a kung fu competition not only sparks a bitter rivalry between different martial-arts associations, it also becomes the linchpin in an assassination plot. But this leaves out Wong Fei-hung's increasingly romantic relationship with his aunt (played by Rosamund Kwan), the rehabilitation of one of the villain's henchmen, and the introduction of a steam engine to a Chinese factory, among other subplots. Once upon a Time in China 3 is not the strongest in the series--the subtitling is unusually clumsy, the editing is rough, the plot is confusing, and the melodrama is more crudely played than in the other films--but there's still a clear, raw authority to the storytelling that is a hallmark of director-producer Hark Tsui (Peking Opera Blues, Green Snake). Though it seems to have been made in a rush, Once upon a Time in China 3 will still reward devotees of Hong Kong films, and the frequent and wild fight scenes will appeal to action fans. --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to the DVD edition of this video.
