The great Cuban ballerina Alicia Alonso was one of the major 20th-century figures of both classical and contemporary dance in North and South America Europe and her native country. This compilation of performances dating from 1958 to 1985 includes extracts from many of her most celebrated roles often in her own choreography that she nevertheless based on original sources. They range from classics such as Giselle Swan Lake Don Quixote and Coppelia to unusual works such as Oedipus Rex (music by Leo Brouwer) and Pas de Quatre. Alonso was the rarest of her breed: a consummate technician a compelling actress and a dancer of innate musicality and intelligence. If only one word could be used to describe her artistry it would be complete.
The ballet Giselle had it's world premiere on June 28th 1841 at the Opera de Paris. The work has a very special significance within the Ballet Nacional de Cuba's repertory as it was with this ballet and with Alicia Alonso's unique interpretation of the role that Cuba first gained a place in the international world of dance. Thank's to Alonso's interpretation and also to her own choreographic version of Giselle a new order of values was set for this ballet which represents the essence and the apotheosis of the dance from an entire era.
