Three classics form Jacques Rivette. Secret Defense is a gripping and fascinating dark Hitchcock style thriller about a scientist who is murdered by a family friend. In Vasavoir the theatre world is the setting. The characters all quick-witted well-read and cultured types revolve around each other in a delightful potpourri of theatre romance and theft. Histoire de Marie et Julien is a fascinating film and rather more interesting for its unusual stylistic approach to genre filmmaking dealing with death re-birth time and memory and is regarded as one of Rivette's long-lost phantom films.
Howards End is E M Forster's beautifully subtle story of the criss-crossing paths of the privileged and those they disdain--and of a remarkable pair of women who can see beyond class distinctions. Dramatic and tragic but also surprisingly funny, this James Ivory film focuses on a pair of unmarried sisters (Emma Thompson, who won an Oscar, and Helena Bonham Carter) who befriend a poor young clerk (Sam West) and, without meaning to, ruin his life. Meanwhile, Thompson also makes the acquaintance of a dying neighbour (Vanessa Redgrave), who leaves her a family home in her will--which her husband (Anthony Hopkins) destroys. But, ironically, he meets and falls in love with Thompson, even as their paths once more intersect with the increasingly miserable young clerk. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's beautifully economical script also won an Oscar.--Marshall Fine

Arnaud Desplechin comes home for Christmas in his outrageous daring and emotionally bountiful new movie. Catherine Deneuve is Junon the family matriarch who greets the news of her life-threatening illness with calm equanimity. Jean-Paul Roussillon is her wise tender husband. Desplechin regular Mathieu Amalric is the black sheep banished from the family by his imperious sister (Anne Consigny both actors last seen in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) who arrives with his bemused Jewish girlfriend in tow (Emmanuelle Devos). Melvil Poupaud is the most sensitive of the children happily married to the divine Chiara Mastroianni. It''s hard to miss with such a cast but A Christmas Tale is much much more than a good ensemble comedy. In this midwinter night''s dream unrequited love collides with bitter resentment nostalgic longing crosses paths with abject fear and pure hatred gives way to vivacious affection.
Witness the birth of a movie star as Barbra Streisand makes a screen debut for the ages in this musical spectacular. From humor to pathos, she hits every note as popular 1920s singer-comedian Fanny Brice, a young Jewish New Yorker whose spirit and supernova talent propel her to fame in the Ziegfeld Follies, but whose devotion to an unreliable gambler (a charismatic Omar Sharif) brings drama and heartbreak into her life. Adapted from a hit Broadway show and directed by Hollywood master William Wyler, Funny Girl hits emotional highs in unforgettable performances of songs like People and Don't Rain on My Parademoments that won Streisand one of the most richly deserved Best Actress awards in Oscar history.

A true twentieth-century trailblazer, HARVEY MILK was an outspoken human rights activist and the first openly gay U.S. politician elected to public office; even after his assassination, in 1978, he continues to inspire disenfranchised people around the world. The Oscar-winning The Times of Harvey Milk, directed by ROBERT EPSTEIN (The Celluloid Closet, Paragraph 175) and produced by RICHARD SCHMIECHEN, was, like its subject, groundbreaking. One of the first feature documentaries to address gay life in America, it's a work of advocacy itself, bringing Milk's message of hope and equality to a wider audience. This exhilarating trove of archival footage and heartfelt interviews is as much a vivid portrait of a time and place (San Francisco's historic Castro District in the seventies) as a testament to the legacy of a political visionary. Special Features: Director-approved digital transfer, from the meticulous UCLA Film and Television Archive restoration, with DTS-HD Master Audio Audio commentary featuring director Robert Epstein, co-editor Deborah Hoffmann, and photographer Daniel Nicoletta New interview with documentary filmmaker and UC Berkeley professor Jon Else New program about The Times of Harvey Milk and Gus Van Sant's Milk, featuring Epstein, Van Sant, actor James Franco, and Milk friends Cleve Jones, Anne Kronenberg, and Nicoletta Postscript containing interview clips not used in the film Rare collection of audio and video recordings of Harvey Milk Interview excerpts from Epstein's research tapes Footage from the film's Castro Theatre premiere and the 1984 Academy Awards ceremony Panel discussion on Supervisor Dan White's controversial trial Excerpts from the twenty-fifth anniversary commemoration of Milk's and Mayor George Moscone's assassinations Original theatrical trailer PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic B. Ruby Rich, a tribute by Milk's nephew Stuart Milk, and a piece on the film's restoration by the UCLA Film and Television Archive's Ross Lipman

Something to Talk About is a well-intentioned but strangely cold tale that concerns an emotionally repressed Southern belle (Julia Roberts) who separates from her husband (Dennis Quaid) after discovering he is an unabashed philanderer. Pressed by her dominating father (Robert Duvall) into reconciling with her spouse, Roberts's character chafes against so much male control over her destiny. Defended by a fiercely independent sister (a catchy performance by Kyra Sedgwick), the heroine develops the nerve to plot her own course in life while her mother (Gena Rowlands) finds the gumption to throw her own mate out of the house. The script by Callie Khouri (Thelma & Louise) is intelligent but hardly clear, and direction by Lasse Hallström (Once Around) can't keep Khouri's unfocused scenes and uncertain purpose from dissolving like sand castles in the rain. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
