Vera is a social butterfly with no interest in anyone but herself so when Brian (Barry Livesey) offers to marry her she accepts as a marriage of convenience and takes lovers when she desires. As time passes the three sisters suffer joy and heartache but as the cruel sadistic behaviour of Geoffrey threatens to send Charlotte insane the sisters decide to unite together with momentous consequences...

  Agnes Of God (1985). Import from France with English soundtrack and subtitles. When young nun Sister Agnes (Meg Tilly) is put on trial for giving birth to and then killing a baby in the Quebec convent where she lives and works, subsequently claiming to have no knowledge or memory of either event, it is up to psychiatrist Dr Martha Livingston (Jane Fonda) to decide whether she is mentally responsible for her actions. Martha comes up against the convent's mother superior, Sister Miriam Ruth (Anne Bancroft), who doubts whether the answer can be found in psychology, believing that it is a matter of Christian faith whether Agnes' actions constitute a murder or a miracle. This Broadway hit gets a solid film treatment by director Norman Jewison but that can't make up for the weaknesses of the script (which were as true onstage as they are here). Jane Fonda plays a chain-smoking shrink sent to a convent to do a psychological evaluation of a novice (Meg Tilly) who gave birth to a baby and then killed it in her little room. Was it a virgin birth? A miracle? And what of the bloody stigmata that seem to spontaneously appear on her hands? Fonda also finds herself clashing with the Mother Superior (Anne Bancroft) over the line between faith and science. But writer John Pielmeier can't flesh this out beyond an idea; in the end, the solution is a disappointingly earthbound one that even the strong acting in this film can't elevate.

The resulting film was his searing masterpiece La Chinoise a mordant satire, pedagogical treatise, political tract, and pop-artwork-plus blood rolled into one. It's early '67 and Radio Peking's in the air for the Aden Arabie Cell, a Maoist collective holed up in a sprawling flat on Paris's rue de Miromesnil the newly purchased actual residence of Godard and then-wife and star Anne Wiazemsky. Véronique (Wiazemsky) and her comrades, including Jean-Pierre Léaud (The 400 Blows, Out 1) and Juliet Berto (Out 1, Céline and Julie Go Boating) lead a series of discussions and performative skits addressing matters of French colonialism, American imperialism, and the broader conflict raging in Vietnam. A meditation on the efficacy of violent protest and militant counteraction played out between Wiazemsky (conducted by Godard via radio-earpiece), and her then-tutor philosopher Francis Jeanson gives way to a plot to assassinate the Soviet minister of culture a red-handed point of no going-back on the path to complete radicalisation. A tour-de-force of the primary-palette images the ˜household images,' perhaps of Godard's early career, La Chinoise serves as both cautionary tale and early sign of fascination with the political currents that would soon lead to the next period of JLG's life and work. The light-show presentation is closer kin to another contemporary Irish musical group, U2. Flatley himself has gone designer chic, too: with close-cropped haircut, earring, buffed abs and tight black pants he bears more than a passing resemblance to Bono. But you have to hand it to the guy--he works hard for the money, as does his attractive corps. The one maddening aspect of this glitzy, entertaining 90-minute festival is the overzealous editing. No image remains on screen for more than a few seconds.
