Yet, for all its scale, T2 remains at heart a classic sci-fi tale: robots running amok, time travel paradoxes and dystopian future worlds are recurrent genre themes, which are here simply revitalised by Cameron's glorious celebration of the mechanistic. From the V-twin roar of a Harley Fat Boy to the metal-crunching Steel Mill finale, the director's fascination with machines is this movie's strongest motif: it's no coincidence that the character with whom the audience identifies most strongly is a robot.   This DVD reviews the career and music of Kraftwerk from their inception in the late 1960s (as pre-Kraftwerk ensemble Organisation) through their most celebrated period in the mid 1970s and culminating with their resurgence during the 1980s with the popularity of synth-pop and techno. The film further explores how Kraftwerk both fitted in and pulled away from the electronic wing of what is often lazily referred to as Krautrock. Sparing time also for many of the groups contemporaries from the same field and tracing the unfolding of electronics in German contemporary music generally this programme presents a fascinating story previously untold on film.

  It's Christmas Eve, and Arnold needs to find a Turbo Man action figure, the craze of the season. Only they're sold out, of course. So the race is on, and the Austrian Oak must do fierce battle with other shoppers and merchants alike, all for the prize toy with which to purchase his son's affections. All of which is unwittingly very sad, on the content level. But the film supposes itself to be amiable enough, on its own shabby terms, even when it climbs out of the screen and starts gnawing at your furniture. If the humour were to get broader it would make HDTV obsolete. The tone can only be termed good-naturedly mean-spirited. Goofy carnival music runs continuously in the background so we never forget that what we're seeing is, er, um, funny. All the action is composed of comic violence, like an unhip Warner Bros. cartoon. Do the filmmakers actually consider this cynical foray to be indicative of the Christmas spirit? Apparently so, because the resolution has Arnold winning quite inadvertently, and offers no clear alternative to the competitive commercialism that drives the film's attempts at humour. In a key scene that's meant to be touching, Arnold and his chief rival Sinbad sit down for a heart-to-heart in which we learn that receiving much-wanted Christmas presents in our formative years is responsible for our success in adulthood. You get that Turbo Man, you'll be a billionaire; don't get it, you'll be a loser. Such is the formidable challenge of parenthood, to cater to the child's whims while it can still make a difference. Different people from different cultures Danko and Ridzik Work closely together and develop a unique relationship laced with humur and respect. The chase leads them into a world of international drug trafficking controlled from within the walls of Statesville Prison and puts Ridzik in conflict with his superior Commander Donnelly (Peter Boyle) as the two renegade cops alternate police procedure Russian Style with Ridzik's free-enterprising techniques.

  Dennis Potter's astonishing six-part miniseries Pennies from Heaven remains one of the edgiest, most audacious things ever conceived for television. The story tells of one Arthur Parker (Bob Hoskins), a sheet-music salesman in 1930s England. Beaten down by economic hard times and the sexual indifference of his proper wife (Gemma Craven), Arthur cannot understand why his life can't be like the beautiful songs he loves. On a sales trip through the Forest of Dean, he meets a virginal rural woman (Cheryl Campbell) he suspects may be his ideal. Ruination follows. Punctuating virtually every scene is a vintage pop song--lip-synched and sometimes danced out by the characters. This startling innovation makes the contrast between Arthur's brutish life and his bourgeois dreams even more dramatic. Potter's dark vision digs into British stoicism, sexual repression, the class system and even the coming of fascism in Europe. But it is especially poignant on the subject of the divide between art and reality. Piers Haggard directs the long piece with deft transitions between songs and story. (It was shot partly on multi-camera video, partly on film.) The cast is fine, especially the extraordinary Cheryl Campbell, who imbues her character with keen intelligence and no small measure of perversity. Bob Hoskins triumphs in his star-making part, bringing a demonic energy to his small-time Cockney, nearly bursting his button-down vests with frustration and appetite. Pennies from Heaven was remade in 1981 for the big screen (with Steve Martin), in an interesting, Potter-scripted adaptation; it's one of the reasons the original has been unavailable on home video for so long. --Robert Horton

  The sun beat down giving a rare reprieve from the rain and wind so typical of Turnberry as if it knew it had a part to play in the historic events about to unfold on the Ailsa course. The final day of the 1977 Open was to become known as The Duel in the Sun” as two of the game's supreme competitors locked horns in one of the most incredible encounters in major championship history. Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus had been engaged in a fierce battle sparring at the head of the leader board. After three rounds they shared the Open lead three strokes ahead of Ben Crenshaw. Behind them Trevino Palmer and Ballesteros toiled. They were paired on the final day having matched scores (68 70 and 65) and talent for three days. After just four holes of the final round Nicklaus had a three shot lead but Watson pulled even by the eighth. At the ninth the crowd could contain their excitement no longer the ropes broke and the fans spilt on to the fairway. Jack Nicklaus again forged ahead taking a two-shot advantage by the 12th. Watson hit back by holing a 12 foot putt on the 13th and followed it with an unlikely and spectacular birdie from nearly 60 feet at the par three 15th. Nicklaus missed his putt for a matching birdie. Watson birdied the 17th and when Nicklaus missed his birdie putt led for the first time all day. Watson found the final fairway and then delivered an approach to within two feet of the pin at the last. It looked as if Nicklaus was beaten — his drive was inches from a bush and he had an impeded swing. But this was Jack golf's greatest and incredibly Nicklaus smashed a recovery shot on to the final green. Still he was 40 feet from the hole — a putt that broke in all manner of directions. Watson whispered to his caddie “Jack is going to make that putt — and of course he did. Watson now had his birdie putt for the famous Claret Jug. He could have wavered — but he did not. The Open winning putt went in centre cup. This updated edition features the Official Film of the legendary 1977 Open Championships at Turnberry and the original live coverage of holes 12 to 18 of the final day.

Schwarzenegger must get close enough to gain the trust of the gangster without being discovered as a mole, while gathering enough evidence to take him down. One of Schwarzenegger's early films, in which he honed his persona, Raw Deal offers up the usual quotient of gun battles and tough talk, with a trace of self-deprecating humour from its star, making it reasonably worthwhile entertainment. --Robert Lane
