Network television was already wrestling with a generation gap and the rowdy cultural upheaval posed by rock when American network NBC aired this 1967 special for Nancy Sinatra, with younger viewers increasingly tuning out the typical videotaped studio productions that typified TV specials. To sidestep those conventions (and, one suspects, to showcase the stars modest performing gifts to best advantage), director Jack Haley Jr. shot Movin with Nancy on film in and around Los Angeles, yielding sequences that anticipate the visual experiments that would characterise music videos more than a decade later. The results are intriguing: for Sinatras fans, the chance to see her in all her leggy, mini-skirted glory will be irresistible, but amateur pop sociologists will be at least as fascinated by the period details and some unwittingly bizarre undercurrents. For the putative teen viewers of the day, theres the psychedelic montage of "Some Velvet Morning", one of several duets with Sinatras frequent partner at that time, Lee Hazlewood (a country-tinged, B-team Sonny to her blonde variation on Cher), interweaving the two singers on horseback and making much out of bewildering references to Euripides Phaedra. For the grown-ups, there are segments teaming her with Dean Martin (awkwardly addressed as her "god-uncle") and Sammy Davis Jr., as well as a reverential sequence in which she caresses oversized posters of her famous father (including a still from his then-current crime feature, Tony Rome, depicting him with a menacing pistol) that raises all sorts of knotty psychiatric issues. The mix of Rat Pack glitz, flower power, and mainstream pop gets an added kick with Day-Glo fashions cut to Carnaby Street lines, vintage commercials for Royal Crown Cola ("Its a mad, mad, mad, mad cola!"), and pop covers that likewise lock in a sense of temporal dislocation as Nancy gamely tackles "Up, Up and Away" (in a hot air balloon, of course) and "Who Will Buy?" from Oliver!, here goosed with go-go powered dancing. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

JAZZ LEGENDS: Jazz Life Volume 2:The two groups are recorded live at the Seventh At Avenue South club in N.Y.C. Art Blakey started as a professional musician with Fletcher Henderson and Mary Lou Williams in the years 1939-1941. He had his own band in Boston and was later with Billy Eckstine and Buddy De Franco before he started his first jazz Messenger Group with Horace Silver in 1954. When he left Silver he kept the name and had The Jazz Messengers for five decades. During this time some of the most important musicians in modern jazz were members of the Messengers. Donald Byrd Kenny Dorham Lee Morgan Freddie Hubbard Woody Shaw Wynton Marsalis and Terence Blanchard (tp); Curtis Fuller (tb); Lou Donaldson Jackie McLean (as); Benny Golson Wayne Shorter Johnny Griffin and Branford Marsalis (ts); Bobby Timmons Chick Corea Keith Jarrett and Mulgrew Miller (p). The highlight of this video is Wynton Marsalis' rendition of 'My Ship' which definitely dispels the notion of many critics who say that Marsalis is all technique and no soul.Mike Mainieri began to play vibraphone at the age of 12 inspired by Lionel Hampton. When he was 17 years old he played with Buddy Rich and became his arranger and musical leader. Later he earned his living as a studio musician in New York. Three makes for a dangerous crowd in this darkly comic crime story. Convicted murderer Lewis (Salvator Xuereb) breaks out of prison with Clark (Dan Gunther), who is doing time for computer fraud. The escapees are heading to New Mexico in search of a secret map to a gold mine that was hidden by a prisoner who recently met with a fatal accident. Clark, however, doesn't like Lewis, and Lewis only has Clark around because he's functionally illiterate and needs help reading maps. Meanwhile, George (Rose McGowan), a young woman who never speaks, has hit the highway after lifting the $10,000 that she and her boyfriend Fred (Art LaFleur) were given for a shipment of drugs that they never actually delivered. After Lewis impulsively shoots one person too many, Clark strikes out on his own, and while hitchhiking, he gets picked up by George, who has stolen a car and has a poisonous snake for protection. George learns about Clark's secret gold mine, and eager to get on his good side, she seduces him. While George spells trouble so clearly that she should have the word tattooed on her forehead, Clark falls for her like the proverbial ton of bricks; Lewis also finds romance of his own with a sleazy woman he meets in a trailer park before meeting up with Clark at the location of the hidden map. Deciding that they work better as a team, Lewis and Clark head out to Mexico in search of the gold, with George tagging along, but what they don't know is that Fred has been following her, convinced that George still has his money. This was Rose McGowan and Salvator Xuereb's second film together, after appearing in Gregg Araki's post-modern road movie The Doom Generation.
Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers are captured at a joyful outdoor gig at the Umbria Jazz Festival on July 20 during the scorching summer of 1976. Here, in his third decade of leading the band, Blakey's enthusiasm runs high throughout a set lasting almost exactly an hour across six compelling numbers. The opening "Backgammon" is a 13-minute showcase for Blakey's masterful drumming and virtuoso improvisation from trumpeter Bill Hardman, with especially fine contributions from pianist Mickey Tucker. There are strong exchanges between Cameron Brown's bass and Tucker's keys on "Along Came Betty" and, while the ten-minute workout that is "Uranus" may be the most exploratory cut, the almost equally lengthy "Blues March" keeps up the tempo. Tucker is again the star of the classic "All the Things You Are", before the set reaches an uplifting conclusion with the breathtakingly interlocking dynamics of "Gipsy Folk Tales". This may not be one of the classic Messengers line-ups, but there's no doubting the commitment and dazzling precision of the musicianship. Likewise the rapt audience and romantic courtyard setting lend a magic which only happens when all the right elements come together, as they undoubtedly do in this highly enjoyable set. On the DVD: Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers on disc has trailers for other TDK jazz releases and a text biography of Art Blakey. The 4:3 picture is sometimes slightly soft and displays the usual faults of live concert footage shot on video, but is generally much better than expected for its age. The sound defaults to good stereo but the Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 remixes add considerably to the sense of a occasion. The DTS track is particularly weighty and almost tangible in its presence.--Gary S. Dalkin
