  • Firefly - The Complete Series [2003]Firefly - The Complete Series | DVD | (19/04/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £34.99

Much praised and much missed after its premature cancellation, Firefly is the first SF TV series to be conceived by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and cocreator of Angel. Set five centuries in the future, it is a show where the mysterious personal pasts of the crew of the tramp spaceship Serenity continually surface. In fact, it's a Western in space where the losers in a Civil War are heading out to a barren frontier. Mal Reynolds is a man embittered by the war, yet whose love of his comrades perpetually dents his cynicism--even in the 14 episodes that exist we see him warm to the bubbly young mechanic Kaylee, the preacher Book, the idealistic doctor Simon, even to the often demented River, Simon's sister, the psychic result of malign experiments. Firefly is also about adult emotional relationships, for example Kaylee's crush on Simon, the happy marriage of Mal's second officer Zoe and the pilot Wash, the disastrous erotic stalemate between Mal and the courtesan Inara. Individual episodes deal with capers going vaguely wrong, or threats narrowly circumvented; character and plot arcs were starting to emerge when the show was cancelled. Fortunately, the spin-off movie Serenity is planned; and in the meantime, what there is of Firefly is a show to marvel at, both for its tight writing and ensemble acting, and the idiocy of the executives who cancelled it. On the DVD: Firefly on DVD is presented in anamorphic 1.78:1 with Dolby Surround Sound. It includes commentaries on six episodes by various writers, directors, designers and cast members as well as featurettes on the conception of the show and the design of the spaceship Serenity, four deleted scenes, a gag reel, and Joss Whedon singing the show's theme tune, more or less. One of the things that emerges from all of this is how committed to the project everyone involved with it was, and is--unusually, you end up caring as much for the cast and crew as for the characters. The discs have subtitles in English and Spanish and the option of listening to the soundtrack dubbed into Spanish or French. --Roz Kaveney

Everybody loves Angela but Angela's married to da mob! In a star-making performance, Michelle Pfeiffer (Scarface and The Age of Innocence) is suburban mafia housewife Angela de Marco in Jonathan Demme's hit comedy Married to the Mob. When her unfaithful husband Frank The Cucumber (Alec Baldwin, Miami Blues and Beetlejuice) is iced by his boss Tony The Tiger Russo (Dean Stockwell, Blue Velvet and Paris, Texas), Angela flees her cloistered existence on Long Island for the big city, with several interested parties in hot pursuit: Tony, who's smitten with Angela, Tony's insanely jealous wife Connie (Mercedes Ruehl, The Fisher King and The Warriors) and FBI Agent Mike Downey (Matthew Modine, Full Metal Jacket and TV's Stranger Things), who believes Angela is the key to locking Tony up for a very long time. In between the beloved screwball thriller Something Wild and the Academy Award-winning The Silence of the Lambs, acclaimed auteur Demme helmed this sublime blend of madcap shenanigans, crime and social commentary, the type of genre balancing act he perfected throughout his varied and distinctive career. Inspired equally by the comedies of Preston Sturges and the real-life crimes of John Gotti, the screenplay by Barry Strugatz and Mark R. Burns is one of the great cinematic satires of the American mafia. It's vividly brought to life by Demme, his steady creative collaborators-cinematographer Tak Fujimoto, editor Craig McKay and production designer Kristi Zea, a very game cast and a typically lights out soundtrack, featuring David Byrne, New Order, Q. Lazzarus, Debbie Harry, The Feelies, Tom Tom Club, Brian Eno and more! George Armitage (Grosse Pointe Blank) adapted celebrated noir author Charles Willefords novel Miami Blues for the screen with new star Alec Baldwin in the lead role as Frederick J. Frenger, Jr., a sociopathic criminal. Arriving in Miami fresh out of jail he commits one crime after another when he meets young hooker Susie (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Single White Female) who he starts to build a pseudo-married life with, including the home cooking and the white picket fence. As Frederick tries to juggle domesticity with his mounting crimes, dogged cop Hoke Moseley (Fred Ward, Tremors) threatens to put his freedom in jeopardy. Baldwin is brilliant as the unhinged criminal tearing through Miami while Armitage perfectly balances the humour and violence in this singular crime comedy that betrays the quirky influence of producer Jonathan Demme (Something Wild, Married to the Mob). Long before Jason sprang from a watery burial, long before Freddy rose from a fiery cremation, there was The Tall Man. Inimitably brought to life by the late, great Angus Scrimm and put on the big screen by cult auteur Don Coscarelli, this iconic boogeyman was unleashed in 1979's Phantasm to lurk in the shadowy depths behind many an impressionable mind's bedframe. The first in a phranchise that would fester in the psychologies of horror phans everywhere, Phantasm became a death-defyingly low-budget hit that kickstarted an increasingly bizarre universe replete with maniacal alien dwarves and skull-embedding metallic balls discharging blood and brain matter at least you'll never have to wonder what goes on behind the closed doors of small-town American mortuaries again. Now resurrected in a 4K restoration overseen by J.J. Abrams with balls to the wall bonus material, from a cast and crew audio commentary to exclusive pheaturettes, the legacy of Angus Scrimm and his spinecurdling eyebrow raising abilities will live on to terrify boys and girls for generations to come. • Malice [1994]Malice | DVD | (19/02/2001) from £20.00   |  Saving you £-10.01 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Movie critic Roger Ebert made this amusing observation about Malice: "This is the only movie I can recall in which an entire subplot about a serial killer is thrown in simply for atmosphere". He's referring to the fact that this hokey but highly charged thriller is so packed with plot twists and red herrings that you'll soon find yourself so confused that you just have to sit back and hope that it will all make sense by the time the credits roll. It never does make much sense, but the movie at least has the look, feel, and twisted momentum of a really good thriller, and the talent on both sides of the camera is pretty impressive. Alec Baldwin plays a hot-shot surgeon who meets up with an old med-school buddy (Bill Pullman), whose wife (Nicole Kidman) has no objections when Baldwin moves into the upstairs room of their New England Victorian home. The situation's ripe for intrigue, suspicion, temptation, emergency surgery, legal proceedings, and just about anything else you'd find in a movie that desperately struggles to out-Hitchcock Hitchcock. Talk about McGuffins--this movie's chock full of 'em! When the plot thickens to the consistency and clarity of quicksand, you can still enjoy the darkly stylish work of master cinematographer Gordon Willis--or you can check out director Harold Becker's more coherent thriller Sea of Love. With Kidman and Baldwin working up a steamy lather, this one's just fun enough to be an agreeable waste of time. --Jeff Shannon

  • Full Metal Jacket [1987]Full Metal Jacket | DVD | (01/06/2006) from £9.99   |  Saving you £4.00 (40.04%)   |  RRP £13.99

One of a series of revisionist Vietnam cinema released in the late 1980s, Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket is essentially split into two stories linked by a number of characters. The film follows new recruit Joker (Matthew Modine) and his fellow soldiers through their basic training and into combat in Vietnam. The first half is a chilling portrayal of military brutality and de-humanisation, mainly at the hands of Sgt Hartman (played at a level of staggering intensity by ex-Marine Lee Ermey), that centres around the tragic character of Private Pyle, a young man pushed to the edge of his endurance. The tone of the film is no less harsh when transported to the combat zone as we see the results of the training process in action: the young men turned into unquestioning killing machines. Joker is perhaps the one exception, a soldier with "Born to Kill" written on his helmet who also sports a peace sign on his lapel. But the film finds itself caught in the trap of many of the war movies of the time--how to create audience empathy with characters who are essentially in the wrong. It's a dilemma that Full Metal Jacket never really solves, although as a spectacle the film is a masterpiece. Made in the days before CGI became the norm, the battle sequences--filmed, rather bizarrely, in London's Docklands before its redevelopment--are hugely realistic and are perhaps the key moments of the movie, heightening the disorientation and fear felt by the soldiers. By offering no more than a snapshot of the Vietnam conflict (the action deals with one individual skirmish), Kubrick cleverly leaves any judgement on the war to the audience, although clearly attempting to influence them. The fate of the characters who survive is also left in the balance, but we can perhaps imagine what awaits them. On the DVD: Part of a series of Kubrick DVD reissues, Full Metal Jacket has been treated to the full remastering and restoration treatment. The battle sequences have benefited the most, gaining a new audio and visual crispness and clarity that adds to their already impressive sense of realism--you can almost feel the heat searing from the screen and the explosions detonating around you. Maybe not the best war film ever made, as some may claim, but certainly one to take you right to the heart of the action. --Phil Udell

Ira Levin's scary novel about forced conformity in a small Connecticut town made the Stepford Wives a compelling 1975 thriller. Katharine Ross stars as a city woman who moves with her husband to Stepford and is startled by how perpetually happy many of the local women seem to be. Her search for an answer reveals a plot to replace troublesome real wives with more accommodating fake ones (not unlike the alien takeover in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers). The closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she faces--not to mention the likelihood that the men in town intend to replace her as well. Screenwriter William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and director Bryan Forbes (King Rat) made this a taut, tense semi-classic with a healthy dose of satiric wit. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
