  • Great Wildlife Moments Introduced by David AttenboroughGreat Wildlife Moments Introduced by David Attenborough | DVD | (17/11/2003) from £5.33   |  Saving you £10.66 (200.00%)   |  RRP £15.99

Introduced and presented by David Attenborough, Great Wildlife Moments is a feature-length anthology that compiles some of the most memorable moments from the BBC Wildlife Unit. With a running time of 108 minutes it consists of 38 sequences drawn from the greatest archive of natural-history filmmaking in the world, breathtaking television spanning the entire biosphere from never-before-seen creatures in the ocean depths (Blue Planet, 2001) to Attenborough himself in zero gravity high above the Earth (The Living Planet, 1984). The anthology is divided into seven chapters covering different environments from "Snow and Ice" to "Jungles", an approach that both gives structure to the film and offers an effective vision of the sheer diversity of life on planet Earth. Most people's favourite sequences will be found here, from a killer whale taking a sea lion on the beach in The Trials of Life (1990) to Attenborough communing with mountain gorillas in Life on Earth (1979). Other segments come variously from BBC wildlife specials, Wildlife on One, The Natural World, The Kingdom of the Ice Bear (1985), Life in the Freezer (1993), The Private Life of Plants (1995), Attenborough in Paradise (1996), The Life of Birds (1998) and The Life of Mammals (2002), with additional narrators including John Hurt, Andrew Sachs and Simon King. This is a fine selection made all the more rewarding by Attenborough's endless enthusiasm and celebration of the world about us. On the DVD: Great Wildlife Moments is presented at 16:9, anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs. Unfortunately most of the material was originally shot for traditional 4:3 broadcast and so has been reformatted by carefully cropping shots at the top and/or bottom. For the most part this works acceptably with little of visual significance lost, though a sequence of emperor penguins from Life in the Freezer is ruined. Only one 4:3 segment--Attenborough high in the rainforest from Attenborough in Paradise--has been presented in its original ratio. Picture quality varies depending on the age of the clips, with material from Blue Planet and The Life of Mammals being flawless and older footage offering some grain, which is never too distracting. Sound is again variable, the Dolby Prologic soundtrack effectively smoothing the transitions between older mono soundtracks and more recent surround sound. The main extra is a fine commentary that is specific to each sequence and calls on the original producers, directors or cameramen (most but not every section has a commentary), while a 12-minute "making of" is actually more of an extended trailer for other BBC wildlife DVDs. The disc also includes a useful BBC Natural History Unit filmography. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Stitch - The Movie [2003]Stitch - The Movie | DVD | (22/09/2003) from £8.94   |  Saving you £7.05 (78.86%)   |  RRP £15.99

Disney sets a record for bringing out a direct-to-video sequel after the initial film. Stitch: The Movie arrives only a year after the enjoyable Lilo & Stitch and reunites the title character (otherwise known as Experiment 626) with his earth-bound family in the warm Hawaiian sun. The story has a nice set-up: since Stitch is Experiment 626, where are the first 625 invented by Dr Jumba Jookiba? Odds are the island paradise will soon be spaceport central for many more aliens. As with other made-for-video Disney titles, the animation is not as complex or rich. This hurts this sequel even more since the original film had such a unique, pastel beauty. Unfortunately, the other elements of the film are just as flat. Even though most of the original voice cast returns, the entire production lacks the same spirit and charm, and the story's theme is recycled (get ready for more "Ohana means family"). On the plus side, the film starts with an Elvis Presley song ("Slicin' Sand") and is only 64 minutes long. The movie sets up the Disney TV series The Adventures of Lilo & Stitch. --Doug Thomas

The Bluebeard legend has been adapted many times through the years. This classic film noir variation on the tale incorporates influences from Daphne du Maurier s Rebecca into the mix, with gripping results. Soon after architect Mark Lamphere (Michael Redgrave, Dead of Night) marries Celia (Joan Bennett, Suspiria), she gradually begins to suspect that he has a past life that he s been keeping from her. But she doesn t know the half of it, and when he leaves on a business trip, she starts to uncover the sinister secret of his purpose-designed house and its apparent surplus of rooms, the seventh of which is kept firmly locked. What lies beyond its door? From the strongly expressionist use of symbolic flowers and shadows in the opening sequence, legendary director Fritz Lang (Metropolis, M) stamps his artistic signature on every frame, helped by suitably high-contrast cinematography by Stanley Cortez (The Night of the Hunter) and a score by composer Miklós Rósza (The Killers) that insinuates itself into every emotional nook and cranny. • Big Brother - Uncut 3 [2002]Big Brother - Uncut 3 | DVD | (09/09/2002) from £14.38   |  Saving you £-1.39 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

With more walkers than your average Gary Lineker advert Big Brother 3 got off to a rocky start in losing Sunita (she said she wasn't having fun, but she'd probably realised she would be voted out in the first few weeks) and having Sandy offer us his re-enactment of The Great Escape. At this point the series seemed doomed: the remaining housemates hardly looked like the most entertaining of suspects. Then the media stepped in and turned Jade into Jabba the Hut's sister and Tim into "Nice but Dim". There were also a few hints of romance and some fumbling under the sheets, but all amounted to nothing with confessions of love only occurring after the contestants had left the house. You can choose to succumb to voyeurism or attempt to hide from it, but love it or hate it, no-one can escape the media juggernaut that is Channel 4's favourite reality TV show. On the DVD: Big Brother Uncut 3 offers the best and worst of the households antics in Dolby Digital 2.0 and 4:3 picture ratio--but come on, would you really want to listen to Jade in full surround-sound glory? The DVD extras are pretty standard fare for the BB releases, with multiple angle viewings of the "Word Game" and "Aqua Fun", which basically means you get to see the girls naked from any angle. Along with this you get the embarrassing audition tapes, which make you wonder just why this lot were picked in the first place. But then no sane person would want to enter the Big Brother House, would they? To prove this, comic character Avid Merrion offers his own audition tapes with their bizarre mix of Euro Trash and psycho-stalker extraordinaire--more of which can be seen in Channel 4's comedy Bo' Selecta. --Nikki Disney
